hi i started atkins about three weeks ago after realising i'd put on about a stone since I bought my wedding dress
I'd bought my dress a little too big anyway just incase anything happened. When I tried it on it fitted but didn't look as good so something had to be done and it had to be done fast.
When shopping I picked up the atkins book as I heard it being praised on tv, I read a bit and started the diet.
At first I hadn't realised you need to cut out sugar too, so it didn't work so well at first, but as soon as i cut out sugar it has been going great. So far I have lost eleven pounds and I haven't been sticking to the diet vigorously as i've had the sneaky chocolate bar or kfc.
I tried to tell some friends about it, but it turned out that they ha already done the diet and it worked well for them too.
From what I can tell, Atkins is great sor a quick weight loss, such as a wedding or holiday, but is not good for a lifetime eating plan, we do need carbs and sugar.
The problem a lot of people have is that they go straight back to their normal diet as soon as they lose the weight which is why people put the weight back on plus more. The body starts storing the carbs more as it's saving for a rainy day, It's important that when you come off the atkins diet you do it gradually increasing your limit by about 5grams a day over a number of weeks. so this week 30grams a day and next week 35 grams a day.
Good luck people with keeping your weight off.

I think that you haven't grasped the basics behind this diet. Sugar is bad.
I went on it a year ago and lost 35lbs. Since then I have gone on and off the diet at irregular intervals. gaining and loosing no more than 5lbs. While on holiday I gain weight and lose it when I got back. But the one thing that I do stick to is NO SUGAR and no processed foods.
You say that your body needs sugar and carbs, why? You need fibre, protein and fats which are turned into carbs but it doesn't need carbs or sugar. You are addicted to sugar and processed foods, which contain lots of sugar. Breads, breakfast cereals and tinned foods are the enemy in this battle. Cut down on them and just eat lots of fruit, veg and unprocessed foods and you will not regain the weight.
Your body needs carbs because they are 1 of only 3 energy sources via food. Sure, sugar is bad, but we all knew that. Good carbs or ok. I don't see why cereal (grains) can be bad for you. Sure, your body will go after the fat and you will lose weight, but some of this is also muscle. Say you lose all your fat and continue to stop eating carbs, where is your body going to go for energy? Muscle is the only thing left. But the problem is, you are eating so much meat/fat that you are never going to get rid of all the fat.
Try getting into the gym if you want real results.
HereinBigD said this in post #10 : Hi there, I started Atkins a year and a half ago and lost 55 pounds in 5.5 months, down to 125 pounds, and have been maintaining ever since. I did extensive research on this way of life before and during and I can tell you, there is a bunch of bogus myths out there. The biggest myth is about your cholesterol sky rocketing since more fat is eaten than in a low fat diet. BS. My cholesteral was way off the charts at 287 and now ranges from 167 to 172. Do be aware that if you stick to it correctly, your cholesterol will raise in the first 4-6 weeks but after that it plummets. If you want a general description and some advise, post your email address and I will send it to you. Good luck
