Capers press conference
August 31, 2003
(on Bennie Joppru) “Bennie will be out for the season. The recovery from this type of a surgery is anywhere from six to 12 weeks. Many times, it’s more towards the 12 weeks than it is the six and then the fact of all the training camp time that Bennie had missed, for him to be out 10-12 weeks and then all the time he has already missed, for him to be able to come back and make much of a contribution this year, we just felt it was in our best interest to go ahead and make this move (putting him on IR). He can’t do anything for four to five weeks, and then he can start some light training. He will be participating, he will be here for all the meetings and that type of thing, he just can’t do anything on the field.”
(on what would have happened if Bennie had been healthy) “If Bennie had been healthy, than we probably would have gone with four tight ends, or certainly taken a good look at that possibility.”
(on what areas were tough when selecting roster) “Well there’s always a number of areas that are tough if you have to release a guy that’s been with you the first year. Guys that have done everything you asked them to do, guys that have been true pros in their preparation and their work ethic, and all those things that we place a high value on. Those cuts are always a bit tougher.”
(on who they are looking to add) “There’s not any one player, but I think again, when you’re in the situation we’re in, what you’re always looking for is you’re trying to see where you can upgrade and we’ll continue to look for that. We were able to do that a year ago, so we’re third on the waiver claim, so obviously when all the waivers come out this evening, we’ll be taking a good look to see if there’s any place that we feel that we can upgrade our roster. It’s not any one specific place, just taking a good look to see if we feel there’s a good football player.”
(on who will be handling the returning duties) “Well we’re going to go with who we think the best man is, when we line up. We have four practices to try and be at full strength before we go to Miami and give our best effort to win a football game. So, Domanick worked back in and we got to get a look at him down in Tampa, but we’ll get another look this week and our returner will be the guy who we think gives us the best chance to win.”
(on the injury situation) “I think we’re on schedule with most of the guys. There’s a couple guys that will be day-to-day and we’ll have to wait and see and probably make a decision at the end of the week whether they’re ready to go or not. But I think Steve McKinney, we’ve had him on course to get back and play, and Jay Foreman, same type of thing. Again, Gary Walker, it will be a day-to-day thing, we’ll have to see how he does on the practice field on a limited basis.”
(on Antonio Rodriguez) “Well I think for a guy like Antonio, and he expressed the same thing to me, that he was very positive about his experience. He came in and gave it his best shot and was excited to have an opportunity. I think he leaves as a better football player than what he was when he came in.”
