Of course the matrix is all about syle and isn't real and it's a computer program. BUT...The most famous stuff from the first movie: Neo dodging bullets, Trinity kicking the guy in the beginning, the ENTIRE lobby fight....all are completely believable within the matrix world. Of course we've never seen someone dodge bullets like that in real life, but it certainly looks like it fits in the matrix world. But there are a select few shots in reloaded and revolutions that just ruin it. If the whole movie was CGI, maybe it would work, but it doesn't, Neo looks fake for 5 seconds, and then real again. It ruins the flow of the movie. The helicopter thing and flying above the clouds was not necessary to the movie, so if you can't make it fit, why do it? Other than those few moments, the effects were incredible.
Originally posted by Antony The BB kicked ass like crazy. It was one of the BEST scenes in the movie. Don't judge a movie based on the quality of the effects. That scene was amazing. And don't give me that "well you don't know about cgi special effects" crap; I'm going to school for cgi. The effects were at times, not believable, but when are cgi effects totally believable. They are easy to pick out 10 times out of 10. It's not like it IS real you know? And anyway, what is the point of this thread? It's not like the W's are going to read this and say "well hot damn, some people didn't like our bb scene.... Oh gosh well we better just remake the som***** for the dvd release." It's not like you can change it. If you don't like the scene, fast foreward through it, or hit the scene skip button on your dvd player.
And the agent jumping on the hood of the car was probably the best done cg in the movie. I can see NOTHING wrong with that scene, other than the fact that he could have easily jumped to the CTS instead. But hey, since when did that matter? It's just got to LOOK cool doesn't it?
There was a noticeable deffect there. The agent that jumped looked like he was wearing a rubber suit. I could see that. The light and the move of the cloth should be more realistic to be perfect.
I myself am a very big fan of the BB scene. My favorite shot was when they first start fist fighting and Neo and Smith switch positions everytime the lighting flashes. Fa sho! Isn't it hard to imagine that the same guys that created and directed Neo crouched over running from the agents in his office building are the same guys that created and directed the dock breach scene and every scene thereafter? Amazing, tho...
"Do you believe you're fighting for something, for more than your survival? Can you tell me what it is, do you even know? Is it freedom or truth, perhaps peace - could it be for love? Illusions, Mr. Anderson, vagaries of perception. Temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose."
I agree with Heiliger on this one. Neo's face in this scene is one of my biggest problems with it. Yes, he moves fairly realistically (a huge one up to the visual effects department), but that static face. He shows no emotion whatsoever. Fighting is very emotional, tense, and painful- so why don't I see these expressions? Yes, Neo is very powerful and could've flown away at the start, but where's the fun in that? This is the first time the two have met since M1, so why wouldn't he fight him? He's testing himself and he's testing Smith for weaknesses. The other problem I had with this scene is a couple of the sound effects were annoying, especially that bowling one at the very end. Other than that I consider this a very good piece of action.
Kevin: Remember that one time when I ate those napkins?
Me: (laughing) Yeah.
Kevin: That was funny. Do you remember what made me do it?
Me: I'm pretty sure you just said, "Hey, watch me eat these napkins".
Kevin: (laughing) Yeah, that sounds about right.
I thought Neo looked the most fake when running over the top of Agent Smiths. Neo also looked fake when they slowed it down just as he's about to kick Smith in the face. Like someone before me said, he looks fake for 5 seconds then real again.
The rest of the BB is great, especially when it's actually Neo fighting the Smith's. Not once during those shots did I think anything looked fake.
As for the argument of anime stylings. IMO thats an excuse for sub par effects sequences.
That being said the Bros. made up for all of that with effects sequences in Zion and the Neo v. Smith fight.
I think the Burly brawl is probably the weakest of the big fight sequences, but I look at it as this, they are movies and are supposed to be entertaining, I take them as they are, not for as how realistic they look, but as to how entertaining and mind boggling the fight scenes are.
