Howard University (Black) student was told by manager that Ruby Tuesday's cooperate policy would require her yo remove her BRAIDED (natural) HAIR STYLE in order to be rehired ( student worked at Tuesday last year with braided hairstlye.) She was told it was a "image" thing.
Student says she wears braids 90% of the time and that she has never chemically treated her hair.
Because of increasing media attention Tuesday reversed their ANTI-BRAID hair policy blaming local restaurant owners for a misinterpretation of the policy.
I've worked in restaurants before, this was probably the store manager's decision, not a nation-wide thing. I don't think it's necessary to boycott every single Ruby Tuesday just because of one store manager's decision.
for some odd reason, while the word "Ganya" was still just a thought-dropping in my head, I thought it'd only be four letters. But apparently it's five. yep.
Plus they reversed the policy very quickly? Why boycott?

So this Ruby Tuesday is a restaurant or a bar I assume. Anyway seems like a stupid descion and it was rightfully reversed and like Dekka said why boycott over a silly descion that lasted a short time.
Only time hair should be an issue in this type of job is in food preperation.
Dekka00 said this in post #3 : Plus they reversed the policy very quickly? Why boycott?
Boycott
Ruby Tuesday changed their anti-braids hair policy only after student sought media attention and they started asking questions about policy. They were FORCED to changed their discriminatory policy, which is scary because its 2008 not 65. T
According to article , a spokesman for Ruby Tuesday NATIONAL headquarters ( not local manager) in Tennesee CONFIRMED the anti braids policy in a tape recorded interview and he was " empatic about the enforcement of the policy."
He also said THE HAIRSTYLE did not meet Ruby Tuesday " standards". ( Anyone in your family wears braided hair style?)
" Our policy for our dress code says that multiple braids are not acceptable as part of the dress code." - National spokesman for Ruby Tuesday
The anti-braids policy was discriminatory against black folks, no doubt.
Ruby Tuesdays has nearly 1000 stores throughout the world. Most of the store managers didn't know or care about the braids rule.
This one case, however, the store manager decided to enforce the braids rule. Racism may well have been the primary reason he decided to enforce it.
The issue was brought to the attention of upper-management and the anti-braids policy was repealed within hours. No, I would NOT say that they were FORCED. An injustice was brought to their attention, and they did the right thing without hesitation.
The purpose of boycotting is to put pressure on someone financially to coerce them into doing the right thing. The targets of boycotts are generally morally apathetic and so can only be "convinced" if it starts hurting their income.
However, the upper-management for Ruby Tuesdays revoked the racist policy because it was obviously unjust. So there is no need for a boycott.
and for the record, I am black, and I think (properly done) dredlocks and braids are beautiful.

Within one hour, Mr. Johnson had called back with a reversal of the policy blaming local restaurant managers for a misinterpretation of the policy.
the policy HAS ALREADY BEEN REVERSED.
