health and global warming post #1  quote:

I somehow believe that all the fuss about health is due partly to global warming.. i'm sure many of you would disagree but the most obvious one is bird flu!!! how did those birds get the virus h5n1?? I'm sure it's due to climate change and now we are all living in fear. I'm very afraid of dying at this age, and my boyfriend, and my family, and my judith[hamster] and my josh [hamster] i freaked out when i read:
quote:
Dr Iea Longini, a well known biostatistician warns keen travelers that they should avoid travelling by air, because “Aero planes re-circulate air which is ideal for spreading a flu virus throughout the whole cabin.”

what do you think about that? isn't it dangerous to travel by air?? I've already bought some tamiflu to be on the safe side.

I would not worry about getting bird flu on an airplane unless you are sitting next to a bird. That story in your link, I think, conveys an extremely biased view. It is biased toward alarming people for an ulterior motive. You mentioned that it freaked you out. That is what the story intended. Why warn people of all the ways flu can be spread by human to human if bird flu is very rarely, if at all, spread human to human?

They keep saying that viruses can easily mutate, and they therefore conclude that it is almost certain that bird flu will mutate to a virus that spreads human to human. So far that has not happened. If it does happen, it will be a major problem for humanity. But the popular conclusion that the bird flu virus is very likely to mutate to the capability of spreading human to human is bogus. We have no way of knowing if it is very close to happening or if it never will happen.

One thing to keep in mind is that governments around the world shoot gobs of research money at individuals and organizations who raise red flags about potential public hazards.
