What Does Dixie Mean to You? post #1  quote:

What does the Song 'Dixie' mean to you?

There has been much debate surrounding the song. Some people believe it to be a racist anthem glorifying to Old South's slavery and refuse to sing it or be respectful of it.

Other believe that it is like to Old Confederate Flags, a symbol of Southern Heritage a piece of history for all southerners to enjoy and feel proud of.

Personally I believe that people who find racism issues in things like songs that only glorify a country's history and say nothing about a race of people are looking for something to complain about.

The song is about the Old South, Old Dixie, before General Grant and General Sherman rode in and destroyed it. There are no racist undertones in it that I can see. Perhaps the people who complain about the song are looking to discredit the Old South and try to wipe the memory of Slavery from the history books.

Or perhaps that are just looking for an excuse to blame people about how the white men keep the black men down. (I am not a believer in this theory although I know there are some people who subscribe to this theory quite passionately)

Anyway I would like your opinion.

"Dixie" is just another song among thousands. Yes, I know it was the battle song for the South during the Civil War. But it's just a song. If it is sung in deference to a race of people, then it is racist; but to sing the song as part of a concert with other songs is not racist (unless those other songs are also in deference to the race of an individual, then the former would apply). To not sing it would infer that I should also not sing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", which is just silly.
