Should all men stay out of abortion debates? post #1  quote:

I know I'm a rookie, so I hope I can start new threads.

So I was debating with a female coworker of mine, who is pro choice, and she brought up the statement "I don't believe men should belong in abortion debates. Abortion is 100% a woman's issue, where men have no place to address". I asked, what about men who are pro choice? She replied " it doesn't matter if a man is pro choice or pro life, they will never understand the issue in its' entirety, because nature prevents them from understanding what it's like to carry a embryo or fetus. They can research, read, work in an abortion clinic, and whatever else, but they will never be capable of understanding the complete issue. So, why debate on something that you will never completely grasp? If nature prevents a male pro choicer to adequately comprehend the issue of a woman's self-autonomy, on abortion, what chance does a male pro lifer have?"

Question: Do men belong in the abortion debate?

Please do not refer to freedom of speech or press, that wasn't her issue. She was stating the men just simply should not be involved in the abortion debate.

Welcome Tonic, feel free to post new threads as much as you want.

I tend to agree that it is a women's issue and men really don't belong in the debate. Almost seems like there are some men use their power as policy makers to try and control women.

I'm a dude, just so's you know, and the only way I could see a male having a legit reason to enter the abortion arena is if he was the father to be. I think the father should have some say. The woman not only is deciding her own future, and a possible child's but also the father's future. I'm not saying both parents should have to turn a key like they were firing missiles from a submarine to get an abortion, but there should be some consideration.

Overall, I think it's a women's right to choose. But with that choice comes responsibility and it can't be used recklessly.

Hey HECK. I have to agree with ya! I am a dude as well, but prolife. I guess the bottom line is that my body isn't the one be judged upon. Therefore, I should probably stay out of it. Yes, the father should have some say. I have encountered woman who believe the father shouldn't have any say unless he finds some miraculas way to help carry the fetus inside him. I disagree. Shutting the father out is preventing him from taking self-responsibility. Of course he should not be the one to make the final descion or have the last word, absolutely not! However, we all, men and women, should be required to take self-responsibility. If a father wants to be a real man and accept responsiblity for his actions, should we not encourage him?

I'm not sure where I stand as far as in men should have a say. All I know is that my biological mother was going to have an abortion so needless to say I am against the whole idea.

I totally agree. If the man wanted to keep the kid but the woman wanted an abortion, why not just carry the baby to term and let the father take over. Like I said, there should be some consideration. Father's rights are important too.

There are just so many instances where a woman could be all gung-ho about having a kid, tell the father he has no responsibilty, then show up in ten years suing for a butt load of back child support. That's not cool. The mother gets all the slack in that regard. Child support, custody, etc. The father should at least fit in there somewhere with regard to the existance of this child.

Welcome to INReview Tonic.

I think that ultimately the decision is a womans because it is her body, but the father should be involved in the decision. It takes two to make a baby, and IMO the father should have a say.

I believe that this is a woman's issue and the only man that should really be involved in it is the father of the baby.
