Is there clear and simple information as to what the circumstances must be and for how long in order to reach each level ?
I mean I know they sort of use the "level of chatter" prior to 9/11 as a barometer for going to Orange ... but how accurate can THAT be ?
I mean if all these chattering jerks devise a plan that includes just shutting up --- does that mean we'll go to
BLUE
or even
GREEN
right before
KA-BOOM

I work for the government as well, the united states navy to be precise. As a member of our nations military I would like to take the time to tell that you, as americans, are in safe hands. Mr. Bush may not be the brightest light bulb on the Christmas Tree but, he believes in what is morally correct, and when red tape and bs is removed, isnt that all that matters? Our country has a resolve that parallels if not surpasses any other country in the world. When called upon, our citizens don't hide in holes. We step up: we say no when a dictator says yes, we say keep going when it seems there is no where to go, and we say live on, when others say die. By safe hands do you mean our troops ? If not, whose "hands" are you referring to ?

Whether you mean we are safe in the hands of our troops or in those of President Bush, to say the Commander in Chief is not too bright is contradictory. As a Navy man, you are talking about your boss and it seems a very odd thing to say. If you were facing a life threatening illness or injury, would you be confident if you were told your doctor is not too bright but does believe in moral correctness ? And what exactly do you mean by "morally correct", how do you know President Bush's beliefs ?

divinewrite, first let me say honestly, that I appreciate your time and effort to reasure, and in one of your first posts here it was especially nice of you and I don't mean to sound critical.
I think you are probably very well-intentioned, but your post comes off as a pat on the head, fluff without stuff and a very nice speech.

Maybe around Christmas the threat alert was raised, and then lowered not too long after. Did anybody see any change in security around your town? I remember a whole lot of police patrolling the streets. It was definitely an abnormal thing to see many cop cars in one place just driving around. It got a lot of people scared because they though something bad were about to happen.
This is a normal sight in Israel. Everywhere you go there are soldiers with guns, even on the buses. Maybe that's what it will come down to in the United States in order to protect ourselves from terrorism.
Putting a tighter grip on our borders would reduce the need for armed partols on our streets. Holding other countries accountable for false IDs, school, work visas and tightening the visitor status to assure that these people leave when they say they are leaving.
I've been all over the world and you are right, it is common place in a lot of countries but, I see it most of it at the point of entry than in the sorroundin communities.

Our borders certainly need to be tightened up and those here illegally should not be rewarded with anything and should not be allowed to stay. Hey, the jobs are going to Mexico anyway so why risk coming here?

Isnt anyone else suspicious? A 'threat level indicator'? give me a break! This terror-meter is never going to get to blue, or green. Its a system of fear propaganda. keep the masses huddled in fear of--anything--and you get away with anything you want. Pre-emptive invasion of a sovern nation in pursuit of non-existent WMD's and a psychopath? no problem. Instituting a new law which enables further spying/prying/watching, in flagrant disregard for the first amendment, of privacy, of civil liberties, and then name it the 'patriot act'? easy.
Just think about it, what makes more sense-a pre-warning system for acts of violence against the american people, or a terror-meter to enable mass manipulation? hate to sound like a conspiracy pirate but-it just doesnt make sense. What can you really do if the threat level is severe? buy a gun? get out of major cities? Duct tape your windows? dont be ridiculous. The system isnt there to warn you-the american public is not the CIA-its there to scare you, so that you shut up and consume instead of question the administration.
