I think he DID lie about the steroids. He bulked up over one or two seasons (off-seasons, correct?), and it never crossed his mind that his trainer might have been juicing him up? Please.
What I don't understand is, why does the government feel the need to weigh in on this? Is baseball receiving federal financial support?
Also, where are the hordes of prosecutors coming after McGuire and his anabolic behind? He violated the same code of baseball ethics that Bonds did, but isn't receiving the same scrutiny...
In anycase, I think that Bonds is basically done, and it kinda sucks because he's only the biggest name out of MANY who have been taking steroids. By no means is baseball clean, and going after one guy doesn't relieve any of the others of their culpability in this thing. It DOES NOT clear MLB of turning a blind eye to the situation in favour of ratings and a resurgency in its fanbase as a result of the homerun races... This is an issue that should be addressed at the top of the foodchain, namely the executives and policymakers for the MLB who didn't bother to shore up baseball's doping regulations from the very beginning.
I think that Bonds makes himself out to be a scapegoat, and he's right, but his abrasive attitude is as much to blame for that as anything else he might want to point out as root causes for them coming after him.
Bonds, in case you're wondering, kindness goes a longer way than any of your monster steroid-powered homeruns. Just a thought...
