I think dental surgery could change your voice. That's why Madonna said she never closed her gap. A spanish singer DID close his gap, it changed his voice so he had surgery to open it up again.
As for the diabetes, it has to do with infection as well, you can't get any kind of infection. And you can't take certain kinds of drugs or pain killers because it messes with your medication.
