I saw an NBC News piece this morning about an urgent appeal for NATO or the U.N. to step in and end the ethnic genocide that is under way in Chad and Sudan. They referred to the perpetrators as an Arab militia called the Janjaweed. It sounded like a lot of innocent people are being murdered. They did not give a reason for it.

It's mainly Sudan, Darfur to be exact the Janjaweed have been about for a while they are Sunni Muslim well armed but poorly trained. They are government backed and were biorn in response to attacks on the government by two groups called the Juistice movement and the Sudanese Liberation army. The Janjaweed have been accused of ethnic cleansing and around 10,000 have died at thier hands.
They have in the past chased fleeing refugees in to Chad but the Chad army fought them back.
At this time the Sudanese government have denied any knowledge or Darfur and have distanced themselves from the Janaweed. There are certain governemnts concerned about Darfur giving aid etc but to date the Frnech are the only country to send UN troops the troops however have a small chace of doing anything as A the Janjaweed want nothin to do with real soldiers and B the attacks are lighting quick normally by car, so by the time you try and stop the attack it is already over.

This morning NBC reported that no chemicals or medications were found in Milosevic's body, and that he died of natural causes. So which report do we believe?

1. He was poisoned.

2. He committed suicide.

3. He accidentally overdosed on prescribed drugs.

4. He accidentally overdosed on prescribed drugs that his doctor gave him with the intent to make him sicker so that he could possibly go to Russia for treatment.

5. His doctor made a mistake in the case of item #4, and gave him too strong of a dose.

6. He died of natural causes.

How's that for a decisive outcome? Not only are there questions about the cause of his death, but more important, there is no verdict in the monumental trial. I would not be surprised if they just keep the trial going so they can find him guilty. But then again, maybe they killed him because they realized that they could not convict him. Just a few thoughts.

No question about that, but that is a tiny, insignificant detail.

Trials of national leaders who have obviously committed mass murder are not so much about the guilt or innocence of the perpetrator, but rather, about the resolution of the wider context that enabled the perpetrator.

Such infamous leaders are larger than life. That is why the trial has to do more than merely resolve the fate of the perpetrator. The trial is far more about resolution (closure) for the surviving victims than it is about Milosevic. In this case, the victims lost.
