Many Americans could care less about what goes on in our prisons and jails. They think that jail should be horrible places because this will somehow get people to straighten up. Of course I think this is a load of crap, but I guess some people will never learn that prison is somewhat of a mirror of society. When you crap on these prisoners in prison, they'll come out and hurt you more unfortunately.
Remember Abu Ghraib? American prisons make that look like Adventures in Gum Drop Land.

Someone on another forum suggested that the prisoners should be tortured and that we should do away with Amendment 8 which states as follows:
"Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. "
Would it be fair of me to say that the majority of these prisoners in these Los Angeles jails are mostly illegal immigrants who are bringing their violence over to our jails.

Heavens11 said this in post #3 : What is your suggestion as to how prisoners should be treated while in prison? What kind of living arrangements should they have?
Well first they need to stop the abuse, the rape, the gangs, the easy access to drugs, there is a lot. I can't do it one post nor can I sum it up simply because the problem is very much an institutional problem.
But fixing the problem won't win support because the public very much favors mistreatment of prisoners because anything else is seen as coddling. I have no sympathy for prisoners, but I think they do deserve a better standard of living than an overcrowded, drug-ridden, and violent environment.
If I wasn't doing neuroscience, I wonder if I'd be into public policy and trying to turn these systems on their heads.
