Cartoon Network Defames Martin Luther King's Legacy post #1  quote:

Jan 15 ,Cartoon Network aired episode of Boondocks that has Martin Luther King saying N-word. "will you ignorant n***as please shut the hell up"

I agree with Al Sharpton that the network owe an aplogy or become victim of protest.

Would this happen to "Golda Mein"? "Lech Walsesa"?

I don't think the blame is with Cartoon Network. The creator and writer of the show is black. I read the comic strip every week. I saw the show once, not bad. They had the two kids saying whitey was the enemy. No public outrage there. The show is a comedy, it's supposed to be funny.

Al Sharpton can sure be whiney at times. I'm black, and if I was living in America, I wouldn't want him leading my country...

I disagree with Sharpton. Comedy is open to almost all things, racist commentary often included, unless it relates to events that are too much of an open wound to society, which is basically the ONLY time it is WIDELY accepted as being in bad taste. Take Howard Stern for instance, or even one of my comedy heroes, Richard Pryor. Shocking and crude, but widely accepted, after sometime establishing their brand of comedy.

If everything that has any hint of offensiveness was taboo in comedy, then there would be NO comedy, because EVERYBODY finds SOMETHING offensive...

Also, for anyone who understands the many ways in which the n word is used within the black community, they recognize that even MLK jr. could use it in a way that doesn't bring down the image of the black community, but only that SPECIFIC person who he might be calling the n word. Not that I agree with that attitude or direction, but it is what it is in the black community...

Let me ask SD, does the fact it's satire from a black man make it acceptable, or would there be a problem if the creator/writer was not black?

For me, its doubtful that I'd see a problem with it eitherway. As long as I find it humorous, and not in poor taste. But, seeing as how I like Family Guy, The Simpsons, Drawn Together, and a few of the other rather crude comedy cartoons, usually poor taste doesn't bug me either. If the person was blatantly racist and not tackling a comedic angle, then that would be a different story, but when it's comedy, I have no problem with it because in general I have a great appreciation for comedy, especially when it pushes the envelope in what I determine to be a creative way.

Now, on the other hand, there ARE those who would have a problem with it eitherway, and while I don't feel the same way, I guess I have to at least respect their opinion, as long as they have what I can consider to be a valid reason for it. Whether or not Sharpton has a VALID reason for his criticism is unclear to me, because I really can't understand that guy most of the time...

What if his cartoon gave praise to Sadaam or bin Laden? critical of Bush ? Can he create show giving praise to Castro? Chavez?
Would his cartroon be allowed to air? Who makes decision? Not the creator of cartoon?

For the first time in the history of Inreview, I almost agree with Malcolm XX on something. They shouldn't have King saying things like that, it crosses the line.

It was a fine post, till the Jews were brought up yet again. I'm not agreeing with that part.

Whats Golda Mier got to do with anything going on? Cept for she was Jewish.

And in every Malcolm XX thread, the Jews come up sooner or later. Very disheartening.

I have to agree with you, Whidden. It's quite disheartening, because it's just another "agenda"

I don't know if I see a coorelation between what was shown and the examples you're giving. I know that Bush is criticized quite a bit, so there goes that one. Praise to Castro or Sadam? I can't really see that happening, but no, I don't think Cartoon Network would allow that to go on the air. But I'm not sure I see the point.

If his cartoon gave praise to any of those guys, then it's not comedy unless it's done in a way that makes us LAUGH. This was intended to be funny, and some people would take it as such. I personally haven't seen the episode, nor have I heard about it til now, but I don't care as long as it was funny, and as long as I interpret it to have been intended to ONLY be a joke and nothing more. When I read about the incident here, you wanna know what I thought about it? Here goes:

In MLK jr's "I Have a Dream..." speech, he said that his dream was to one day see all people of every colour, creed, etc, being judged not by the colour of their skin ("n" word as a racially derogatory term) but by the content of their character ("n" word as a word meaning the equivalent to "moron"). I saw it to mean that MLK jr was judging the content of that character's character by using the "N" word to call that particular person a moron, which I think is funny in what I consider to be a clever way. If I'm incorrect, seeing as how I've only been able to READ about the incident and not actually VIEW it, then someone needs to point me in the right direction so that I can view the incident and THEN make a snap judgement...
