---------------------Kalyn's P.O.V.------------
I looked out the window."C'mon Mom! We're going to be late!" I said.
"I'm sure you'll live!" my mom, Sage, replied.
"I've never been late to Faye's picnics before!" I whined.
''Does it matter that Clay is going to be there?" she said.
''Maybe.''
She rolled her eyes. Maybe I should explain. O.K. My mom grew up with Clay in Faye's house. Sort of. She had parents and all, but she never really went home. Her parents were always fighting. She hasn't spoken to them since she was 12. I've never met them. my mom told me when I was only little: "Kalyn Sophia Hensley, you will never go through the same thing I did!"

We turned the cornerand there he was. Clay Aiken. In all his cute, geeky, southern glory. Helping his mama prepare for the annual summer picnic. Well, I guess you could call it helping if stumbling around with a box of of paper napkins is helping, that is.

*brain block. Maybe y'all can help me out?

I'll help, Beffers!
--------------------
I watched him try his best to step over all the obstacles in his path with only his sense of feel to guide him. I might have been only 17 but I knew that what I felt for Clay was nothing short of love. Of course, I couldn't approach him about it seeing as I was too young but a thought went through my brain.

"Only one more year to go!"

Clay's and my mother's relationship was a close one. They acted and felt like brother and sister. She was 7 years older than him but when they were together it was like they had no age gap at all.

"Sage? Little help here?" Clay yelled out, balancing on one foot.

"You're on your own. You should know better than to try and carry 4 boxes at once as clumsy as you are." Mom retorted.

"Ha...you are so very funny! Come on. Help me old woman!" Clay giggled.

My mother was far from old. She was a beautiful 34 but could easily pass for 21. For as long as I can remember though, Clay had always called her Old Woman.

After watching him struggle and finally gaining a little sympathy for him, Mom and I rushed to take the load from his hands.

"Kalyn! You look great today!" Clay exlaimed when his vision was finally cleared of cardboard.

"Thanks. You do too!" God what was it about him that made my stomach gain a load of butterflies?

I wasn't trying to look "great" really. I had a soft butter-yellow summer dress on that sported spagetti straps and a knee length flowing skirt. I topped it off with strappy yellow sandles and pulled my dark hair into a high ponytail.

"Kalyn? I'm going to take a walk around the park until the food is done. You wanna come?" Clay asked while looking at the ground.

"I'd love to, Clay." I said shyly.

This was going to be an interesting afternoon....

Okay...there ya go baby girl. Your turn!

As we headed down the street, I looked Clay over. He had on a white button up T-shirt and a pair of old, faded blue jeans. Nothing fancy, but he was sssooo fine. We didn't say much. ''Tomorrow's my birthday." I ventured. He nodded. "I remember." he said quietly. By now we were entering the park through the tall entrance gate. I looked at Clay. He was grinning. "What are you up to?" I said suspiciosly. He just grinned wider. He had to be up to something. "Surprise!" Clay's voice broke me out of my thoughts. I looked up. There, in the middle of a circle of roses, was a sleek, silver Mustang convertable. "I...you....how...oh my gosh!"
"Happy birthday! You like it?" he said.
"I love it!" I said, "Oh Clay, you didn't have to do this!"
"But I did."he said.he handed me the keys."Mom's going to be so excited! We are going strait home!" As we pulled into the driveway of Faye's house ,Mom gasped. Faye dropped a plate of fried chicken. "Hey Mom. It's my B-day present. You like?"
"Oh my gosh!" she said.
"My words exactly!Hey Faye, can I use your phone?"
"I suppose. Why?"
"I gotta call all my friends!" I gave Clay a big hug. He blushed."Thank you sssooo much!" I ran inside and got on the phone.

I called about 20 people. I didn't even know some of them After that I went back outside to my glorious Clay. That was when I got the biggest surprise of my life. the most wonderful one, too.
"Hey Kalyn!", Clay called to me, "Come here!" I walked over to where he was standing.
"Yeah?"I answered.
"Iwaswonderingifyouwouldgooutwithmesometime?!"
"I''m sorry, I didn't quite catch that."
"Would you like to go to dinner with me."he said, slower this time.
"I ...um..YES!" I was so happy! A date with Clay! I went inside and danced my little heart out!

Um..yeah I don't think so.

I am your mother and went through 36 hours of hard labor with you and I will scold you in the middle of mardi gras if I so choose! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!

So there!
