Taiwan Typhoons post #1  quote:

I've decided to start posting whenever there's a typhoon... 'cause, like, there's a lot of them in the summer time. We've already had 2 major ones, and another one is coming right now.

Basically what that says is by tomorrow morning at 8 am, the eye of this typhoon will be right over me (in TaiBei/Taipei/台北.

Though that means a day off, which is always good.

Unfortunately it means, like, people dying and houses collapsing and that... but I'm sure I'll be fine.

err... I think...

This map shows another typhoon coming up behind it, but they're predicting this one will go up to Japan:

Grant, you stay safe! That is scary having something like that coming your way. Here in CA we only get earthquakes. I can't even imagine having to sit out a major storm.

Just found out I can get off work at 4 today. Woo hoo.

I'll be safe. I'll probably just stay home. Provided there are no avalanches, I should be aok.

It doesn't really scare me happens 3-5 times a year... plus the earth quakes, we just get everything out here, don't we?

Not for more than 50 years

They have this really good exhibit in Taiwan at the moment "Comfort Women Of Taiwan" ... which is basically women who were "given jobs" (ie. kidnapped) by the Japanese soldiers in the 20's, 30's and 40's... and were made to ... you know. Anyway, there's about 50 photos of a few of the women who lived through the ordeal. They're, of course, very old, but its very moving to read about them. Most of the women couldn't bring themselves to marry.

Gaboman Not To Worry About China Typhoon And Attack post #7  quote:

Yeah, all HOT air only. small underwater vehicles smuggling in thousands of Communist civilians disguised subserviants to cause internal dissent in Taiwan only.

No military invasion.... all talk and no action. Threats, threats and propaganda, propaganda.
Although the U.S. government does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state, it has remained its biggest weapons supplier and has pledged to defend the island, if China attacks.

During a visit earlier this month by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao to Washington, President Bush calmed Chinese anxieties by saying the United States opposes any unilateral decision by either China or Taiwan to change the status quo.

World News - March 14, 2005

China threatens to attack secessionist Taiwan
By Jenny Booth, Times Online

China today passed a law authorising the Chinese army to attack Taiwan if the self-governing island tries to move towards independence. Only two delegates abstained in the otherwise unanimous vote by the National People’s Congress to approve the use of "non-peaceful means and other necessary measures to protect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity".

The legislation does not specify what is meant by "non-peaceful means", but analysts believe it would cover anything from blockade to surgical missile strikes and all-out invasion.

What KenNJ said ^ mostly hot air. A lot of people think 2008 may be the year, but I doubt it. Never know though, the nutball of a president at the moment is enough of a sh** stirrer for it to happen.

Umm... at any rate, Japan invaded Taiwan in 1895, stayed til '45, that's when these Chinese government ran over here, claiming Taiwan and China are one and Taiwan's government was the sole government of China.

That came back and bit them in the ass

The Confort women were from the Japanese time... its just what I thought of telling you about to make my post seem more interesting

I've been wondering about the China/Taiwan situation and haven't known how to ask you. Your post gave me an in. Guess I could have just up and started a thread asking you.

Yes, your information about the women was very helpful. Gives insight into my near old maid status.

Also in the Comfort women exhbition they have some photos from back in the 30's. Some of the women were quite attractive. But the thing that caught my attention was a photo of the Japanese men lining up for their turn. Just the twisted smirk that was on this one soldier's face... I wanted to slap the heartless bastard!

Back to the typhoon: apparently I can't leave at 4. Government says yes, the boss says no way jose... unbelievable.

Some Future Hypes And Some Ugly Past post #12  quote:

It's only a matter of time that Taiwan will be re-united with China. I think I might have posted this somewhere before (maybe another board) that the minnow might swallow the whale when the merger takes place, making Taiwan it's Brain and Think Tank. Since China regaining Hong Kong and Macau, neither have made that much impact.

But the prime jewel is Taiwan and China is courting many of Taiwan's best and brightest to do research and development in China (building special campus working facilities and modernized community housing for their families), as well as giving special incentives to Taiwan's big businesses to open manufacturing facilities there.
Last month I was talking to this Taiwanese Manager who runs one of the new China manufacturing plants and according to him, their Taiwanese company set up offshore companies and protect their share of the profits with lots of autonomy from the Chinese authorities. Their modern plants employ several thousand people in China.
China wants Taiwan's technology and would never invade it by force to kill off their prize and crown jewel. It's all hot air and media propraganda to justify the old war hogs military job and influence back in China. These are their typical propaganda bunk.

China Reveals Nuclear War Plans Against US 3-21-00

WASHINGTON (UPI) - China's People's Liberation Army has outlined plans, including a nuclear conflict with the United States, to "liberate" Taiwan, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post newspaper reported Monday.

The PLA issued a 16-page publication, the Howangjio Weekly, that was devoted to Taiwan, that was sold on street corners. In contrast, most Chinese newspapers had little to say about Taiwan's pro-independence vote.

The publication included plans to send 200,000 fishing vessels with a two-million-strong invading force to take over Taiwan. It also included photographs of what it said were the most advanced secret weapons in the world. These included laser weapons to disable the U.S.-owned F-17's guidance systems, the newspaper said.

The PLA has reportedly been working on a new generation of nuclear weapons, the publication said, and it outlined steps by which China would threaten the United States with nuclear war. China would then sway U.S. public opinion by making economic concessions, and it would increase arms purchases from Russia, the Post reported.

It would then stage a limited attack on Taiwan and if that failed, China would mobilize its people i nto exercises that would show that it is preparing to survive a nuclear war, the newspaper said.

The Comfort Women: Japan's Brutal Regime of Enforced Prostitution in the Second World War (Paperback) by George L. Hicks Gaboman brings up some bad war memories.

Taiwanese Comfort Women Investigation Committee reported on 66 cases of complaint, and the Taipei Women's Rescue Foundation started interviews since March of 1992. It said that only Japanese military personnel's could use the services of comfort women, no civilian was allowed to visit the place where comfort women worked. Some of these places were visited by generals as well as ordinary soldiers, but some places were visited only by certain rank. For example, officers' clubs only admitted officials captains and higher ranking officials and generals would usually visit places where only Japanese women worked. And some of these places were visited only by lower ranking of noncommissioned officer and soldiers. There were also places where only Japanese offices and soldiers were admitted which did not open to Taiwanese and Philippines. The comfort women on Sinai Island were visited mostly by Taiwanese draftees.
Comfort women is a euphemism used for women who worked as prostitutes in military brothels in Japanese-occupied countries during World War II. Comfort women were from the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, and other Japanese-occupied countries/regions.

Estimates of the number of comfort women during the war vary widely, ranging from 20,000 to 30,000. Testimony by surviving comfort women suggests the actual number to be on the higher end of the scale. Most of the brothels where comfort women served were located in Japanese military bases, but their management was handled by the local people, not by the Japanese military.

Westerners Called Them Hurricanes; Pacific Typhoons post #14  quote:

The seventh major Atlantic storm of the season, Ophelia, turned into a hurricane and remained an unpredictable threat to the United States as it battles with the devastation of Hurricane Katrina(AFP/NOAA/HO)

Okay, you don't get a vacation day Gaboman on Sunday. Think of it this way, you win either way.

1. If Typhoon hits strong, you get Monday off at least.
2. If Typhoon misses or fizzles out... you get to go about life as normal.

You should thank God because you didn't get hit by two Monsters like Tsumni or Katrina.

"Hurricane" and "typhoon" are two names for the same thing, namely, a tropical cyclone with winds of 65 knots (75 m.p.h.) or more. When these storms occur in the Western Hemisphere (in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico), we call them hurricanes. When they occur in the North Pacific Ocean west of the International Date Line, we call them typhoons. Names of Pacific hurricanes, Atlantic hurricanes, and typhoons are all derived from separate lists.

It went all ca-ca and missed. Headed up further North and hit China between Taiwan and Japan

Taiwan can't really think themselves lucky. Just 6 years ago an Earth-quake hit that killed hundreds and, at the time, looked like it devestate the entire Country.

Got through it okay though
