I went on holidays for two weeks and we had a Temp come in and do my job at work.
The Temp got some Spyware on the computer somehow that started eating up space and the Temp didn't know what to do. She left it a while, but it got so bad that she couldn't load anything or open any programs, etc.
So she went through the computer looking for files that (she thought) were un-used or old and (she thought) she wrote them on to CD's. Once they were burnt on CD's she went through and (without checking the CD's) deleted everything from the hard drive to make room so she could do her work.
I get back from holiday and there's three CD's on my desk, one of them fully written to, one of them half written too and one not written to at all and a whole pile of IMPORTANT stuff missing from the hard drive. I go through with the spy ware remover and it takes three + gig of crap off my computer.
So I go to her back-up CD's to get back the stuff that I need. The disk fully written to won't even show up in Windows Explorer or anything. It says there is no disk in the drive. So we've lost all that stuff. The disk that's half full has some of the files on it and one disk that's totally empty, has nothing on it, but at least it actually READS in the CD drives.
So the disk with some files on it: some files can be opened and changed, etc and I've copied them all back on to hard drive. But some of the files there it won't let me open and comes up with the message "you do not have permission to open these files, please check the file/ disk and try again".
Are these corrupt files? Are they locked? Is there any way I can save them?
Wouldn't you know it, the locked ones are all the important things and long letters and Leases and Contracts that are like 10 pages + and I really can't be bothered to retype them all and track everything down again, so if any one has any ideas. PLEASE HELP.
Perhaps they're completely stuffed... Either that or she saved those files with her user name logged on, and basically made those files able to be read only by herself (I don't play with word or xls or whatever documents enough to know the specifics of that...). Those are my initial thoughts at least...
That woman sounds like a dit. I couldn't imagine the problem she's experienced is even possible unless she spent like 10 hours a day trying download pornography.

There's only one log-on into the computer, so she had to log in under that one, so it can't be a user-name-type problem. I guess she could've locked each file individually, but that would take a long time and what would be the point in that?
My best guess is that she buggered up the CD writing process and the CD has some corrupt files and some good files. I am beginning to think there's nothing I can do .....
So I have to spend tomorrow retyping three Commercial property Leases and Mangement Authorities. Woo Hoo ....
She was a dit, believe me, she rang me almost every day. On the first two days of my holiday she rang me up three or four times a day. I wouldn't have minded so much if the offioce had been on fire or something, but it was mostly stupid stuff. We have never had a Temp who was any good. It's hard to find good people.
Wait, could you copy all the files over to the hard disc, or some wouldn't copy? If they didn't copy, then it's burning was totally stuffed... if you can copy them, they probably aren't corrupted from the burning...

All the files sizes are right.
All the info is there, I just can't get access. Some of the files are labelled "read-only" mostly smaller unimportant ones, but I can't change the read-only-ness because access is denied.
She stuffed it up somehow even using Nero. At first I thought she done the drop and drag within Windows Explorer, which sometimes gives me grief, but she left the discarded Nero files on the hard drive so I can see she's done it through Nero and even still, she stuffed up not one but THREE CD's.
All the files should be read only on a CD, unless it's a re-writable CD, then sometimes they're not. Read-only files should be able to be read no matter what, but if you want to edit... not so much.
Could be she was multi-tasking while the CD was burning. That's not always the best idea.
