I started watching American Idol, middle of the first season. I got hooked. And I've watched it faithfully ever since.... I even got my husband hooked on it...LOL
And my observation has been that the true winners of this competition are the ones that don't get the title.
Winning this competition means that the Idol is OWNED for the first year by the producers. IMO they eploit the kids. These kids come into it with high hopes and dreams of having a music career. Sure, this is the most exciting thing that's come their way, and they are grateful, because they didn't know how to kick start their career.
Who REALLY won the first year? I think it was Tamara Gray. She got to go on her own and did great things, including her role in Boston Public, where she played a teenage girl, with talent, who was being beaten up by her controlling boyfriend... bravo Tamara! As opposed so some "Beach Blanket Bingo" movie that Kelly got to make and embarass herself because of her contract.
Winner of the second season, was truly Clay, the once geeky guy who America learned to love, but was smart enough to sue them to get out of the contract that payed him too little of the profits.
Third season, who knows... all I know is... where the heck is Fantasia? She put out her required CD, made squat off it, because the producers take the big bucks, and she's sitting out there not much better off than she was...
I think that this year has had far better talent than previous years... and I can't even guess who's going to win... because you know it's who the producers want to exploit...
I am annoyed that Scott is still in the competition... I really don't think he's very good, on the other hand... being exploited and working for peanuts would be OK for him, he's got a bigger issue to deal with... proving his father wrong, when he told him he would never amount to anything... proving his father wrong is worth "all the gold in china"...
Carrie should have gone for Nashville Star... less stress, and probably more lucrative for her...
I like Connie for his stage prescence... I will miss him in this competition... not the best singer, but that boyish smile always made me smile... I'm old enough to be his grandma...
So, in wrapping up, I look at the final 5, and I have to pick Bo as my fav... he's adorable and sincere, and I love rock music... so therefore, I want him to come in second, so that he still gets all the opportunities of the winner, without the gouging
<sp> that the show does to these kids...
Well, Kelly might have done a movie that flopped, but she's since moved on, and doing much better things.
Tamyra might have gone and done things, but where is she now? I've not heard anything from her... though, she's got a VERY beautiful voice. I would love to hear something from her.
Ruben... bleck. What a joke that he won. And yes, Clay was the true winner of season two. He's done a lot, and his popularity hasn't really died down. Even Josh Gracin, who was what, fourth... he's got a country album out (which I own) and is getting a lot more play than Ruben.
Season three... well, that entire season, in my opinion, was a complete waste of time.
This season... I have to say that I would like to see a few people, some who've already gone, make it in the industry. Jessica and Constantine... I can't believe that they are gone... and I hope that we've not heard the last of them. Bo, and Carrie, I think, both have promising careers.
Overall, I have to agree with you, that the winners end up in these horrible locked contracts, and get the shaft. But, if they don't give up, they can still have a career out of it.

I think out of all the Idol winners, Kelly is the only one to really make it.
Clay was much better off coming in second. He is my overall favorite of all the Idol seasons.
This year I like Carrie, and for some reason, Anthony. He just has a beautiful voice. Carrie may be able to ride through the Idol contract, but I agree that second is the place to be.
Welcome to INR Phoenix2582. I hope you stick around.
Thanx for the welcome, I've actually lurked here for a couple years now, but just became motivated to post.
I like this forum better than idolonfox, because they are really nasty over there... here everyone seems pretty level headed and can discuss different points of view...
I tired to post my same message on there, but guess what, it didn't show up...LOL... and who said the competition isn't controlled?
yeah, i feel that way too. i felt weird saying constantine was my favourite but I didnt want him to win... but that's exactly why. i didnt want someone like him, who already has experience in a band, to have to follow every expectation that american idol has for their winner. i think someone like carrie is better off winning. someone who perfectly comforms to their mold.
I started watching on the last show of the first season. Then decided to try it the second season and have been hooked. I wonder why we didn't see but one or two guest judges this year. Some of the comments from the judges just irk me. Yes the need good critizism in the beginning but once everyone starts voting they need constructive comments not "Pack your bags your going home".
Exactly Ron. They should be telling them what they could do better. I hate the "pack your bags" comments.
I started watching during the first season. I was in the hospital during the first week of AI with the auditions during season 1. There was nothing else on TV so I watched and got hooked.
I found the guest judges to be pretty worthless anyhow....they never really say anything that will help them...too many of the guest judges have been like Paula...all sweet and no sour.
I remember Kim Locke using what Simon said and making herself better every week....she ended up being the last girl standing because of those sour comments.
I would be okay with other judges if they would just tell them what they did wrong with SINGING the song...but too many of them wont tell them how to better themselves.
Of course thats just my opinion....I could be wrong. (Dennis Miller)
