Dark energy post #1  quote:

It has been said in 2000 by two astropyschics that the universe is dominated by this. They have seen distant supernovas in the sky and have receached this conclusion. My question is.... Why would studying dark energy be so important now?

I'd think it could open up our understanding of the universe, or at least present us with certain questions that could in time lead to a greater understanding.

I think it's great, but I don't know how much we'd really be able to learn at this point either... Still, it's the questions that will lead to knowledge, so I say go ahead and study dark energy...

We shouldn't be worrying about it now because it obviously won’t affect us. But the more time to study and learn…. the better our distant relatives will be prepared. And that’s IF they survive the giant volcano the is suppose to erupt and kill us all or that meteor the size of Alaska coming lol It feels like everyday we discover something new that will completely destroy this planet. Kind of like in Men in Black…

Yep. That asteroid is the real scare for me. I think that's partly why NASA is running the comet-buster mission. I think it's a two-fold experiment:

1. Get a greater understanding of how comets work.

2. To see if blowing up a celestial body bigger than the moon is possible with our current technology, and if it isn't, then to learn what measures need to be taken to get to that point, JUST IN CASE it's ever needed...... Say, like in 25+ years...

The issue with dark matter is not one of worrying, but of understanding. There are indications that substantial portions of the mass of galaxies and the universe for that matter is not accounted for by the stars, planets and interstellar particles alone. This mass must be accounted for by something that cannot be seen. That something is being labelled "dark matter". It's significant to our understanding of gravitation.

I wonder though if there may not be such a thing and that in reality the calculations for mass & gravity are simply incorrect and need to be revised to account for more modern observations of the universe. This would eliminate the mysticism surrounding dark matter and would serve as a poignant reminder that our theoretical calculations are not always 100% and must be challenged from time to time.

For awhile I was obsessed with dark matter. It seemed to be the only thing that theoretical physicists seemed to talk about. It went along with my obsession with trying to create a vacuum that could equal the four dimensional vacuum in space.
