Let me ask this question, if Sordidmish is black is it still a race issue?

Not saying that he is, Granted the title should have been. "Man abducts and kills teenage girl in Texas. Man in custody."

However that really doesn't have the impact does it. I mean it probably happens all over the country and doesn't make national news.

Here we have to question, out of all the people who left Wal-mart before midnight. Why did he pick that particular girl to abduct? I mean he sprinted across the parking lot to abduct her vs choosing or waiting for someone a bit closer. Did he stalk her and wait until she left? Did she say something to him in the store which made him wait for her? Why did he not pick or wait for a Black girl? Wouldn't it have been a little easier?

There is some reason that he picked her vs anyone else.

sordidmesh has made other comments that implies he is a bit racist.

race probably had absolutely nothing to do with this, there was no reason to report it like that.

what would you do if you read "White man abducts and kills white girl in Texas?"

I think it's pretty damn obvious that sordidmesh was trying to imply something here.

Again, that's not the story, and I agree that the title was not a very good title.

I don't know what goes thru the mind of a lunatic. Maybe she was the only one who walked out by herself and he saw the opportunity.

And maybe he was trying to imply something but you are making it worse by going on and on about it.

from a CNN article
Marine and preacher's son
However, Swindle said he believes Holden's assailant chose her over other potential victims. "He did make several other attempts before he did pick out Megan," he said.

Swindle provided little detail about the killing, but said Holden died of a gunshot wound, adding: "We have every indication that she was shot at the location where her body was found."

Authorities said Williams kept heading west as he continued his crime spree, attempting a robbery at an Arizona RV park, but was foiled by a store worker who fired the shot that landed Williams in the Arizona hospital where he was treated and then taken into custody.

"He said, 'This is robbery, I want all the money in the cash register,"' retired New York City firefighter Richie Chapman said. "And as he said that, he drew a weapon from underneath his shirt, and I drew and fired."

Because Holden was kidnapped in Tyler, Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham said he would seek capital murder charges.

It was not known if Williams had an attorney.

Police said Williams, a Marine and preacher's son, was arrested last month in Tyler on a cocaine possession charge. He was released the same day on $2,000 bond.

Police said Williams also was involved in an armed robbery at a convenience store in Texas on Thursday.

"Something happened to my son," the suspect's mother, Pat Williams, told Dallas television station KDFW. "Some of the things that he endured I may never know. But it changed who he is and for that I'm sorry."

As word spread Friday of the Tyler Junior College student's death, about 100 people sang "Amazing Grace" and prayed during a candlelight vigil held outside the store where Holden had worked for about a month.

Martin, the police spokesman, said the victim's mother was in a wreck while driving to Tyler. She was shaken and covered with cuts and bruises after flipping her car three times, a relative said.

Stacey Sullivan, Holden's high school principal, described her as a friendly, easygoing girl who made a point of saying hello to people by name.

"Megan was just one of those students who you instantly liked," Sullivan told The Dallas Morning News in Saturday's edition. "Everyone is so upset because it was such a senseless tragedy. Why did this have to happen to her?"

Jury convicts Johnson in killing
By William C. Lhotka
Of the Post-Dispatch
01/17/2005

Johnny Johnson is guilty of first-degree murder, a jury decided Monday before returning to a St. Louis County courtroom to hear testimony on whether he should be executed for bludgeoning 6-year-old Cassandra "Casey" Williamson.

The defense never denied that Johnson did it, but urged a verdict of second-degree murder, which would have resulted in a sentence of betwen 10 years and life in prison, with parole. A sentence of life without parole remains an option, depending upon the outcome of the death penalty hearing that continues today.

It took the jury of 10 men and two women about three hours Monday afternoon to find Johnson, 26, guilty of armed criminal action, kidnapping and attempted rape as well as murder.

Because Johnson is mentally ill - he has been diagnosed throughout his life with depression, schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia - defense attorney Bevy Beimdiek argued that he was unable to reflect upon his actions, and lacked the cool deliberation required by law for a first-degree murder conviction.

Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch, handling the case personally, insisted that Johnson had planned all along to take Casey from a house on Benton Street in Valley Park where both were staying the night of July 25. McCulloch said Johnson's plan was to take her to an abandoned glass factory nearby, rape her and then kill her so she could not identify him.

Officials said Johnson was a drifter who had known Casey's family for years and was allowed to sleep on a couch after saying he had nowhere to stay. Casey was missing the next morning, triggering a massive search before the body was found.

In the first phase of the trial, McCulloch showed the jury explicit crime scene photos and autopsy pictures of the victim, who had been beaten with a brick and a rock.

After reading Johnson's convictions for a range of crimes from property damage to burglary to stealing, McCulloch had the victim's relatives show photos of Casey and her siblings, Chelsea, 11 when Casey died, Elizabeth, 4, and Ernie, 2.

Casey's mother, sister, grandfather, grandmother and aunt described her as a fun-loving, charming, intelligent, bike-riding, father-following girl, who won a church award for Bible quoting and proudly represented as a kindergartner at her Valley Park school in ceremonies after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

With the victim's mother, Angie Williamson, testifying, McCulloch also played a 12-minute family videotape.

Angie Williamson described a bike accident in which her daughter fell down a levee. Back at the house, Casey was more concerned about the condition of her beloved bicycle than about her own bumps and bruises, her mother said.

Angie Williamson said Casey was always at the side of her father, Ernie, and always seemed to know when he was coming home from work. The two were inseparable, she said. Since Casey's death, her husband "has given up on life completely," she testified.

Her oldest daughter, Chelsea, suffers from post-traumatic stress and depression since the murder, Angie Williamson said.

Just before Casey's death, Chelsea testified, Casey was at a program getting an award for being able to quote from the Bible and singing "I am a Christian."

Since the death, Chelsea said, little Ernie "thinks he can be Superman and fly up to heaven and bring her back. He dressed up as Superman this Halloween for that reason."

Casey was living at the home of her grandfather, Jim Wideman, when she died. He recalled letting her honk the air horn of the truck he drove.

He said people ask him why he hasn't moved from Valley Park because Casey's death has affected him so much.

"I have to stay here because this is where Casey's memories are," he told the jury.

"Every single one of us has been affected by the loss of this little girl," said defense attorney Beth Kerry in the opening statements of the punishment phase. "Now is the time to consider what you do with the life of Johnny Johnson."

Kerry told the jury that while there is no excuse for what happened, "life in prison without parole is the most appropriate punishment." She said the defense planned to call witnesses to present a portrait of Johnson's life.

Testifying for two hours Monday night for the defense was Wanda Draper, a professor emeritus at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. Kerry called her as an expert on childhood and human development.

Draper said Johnson was neglected by both of his parents as an infant and, basically, life never got any better. He flunked kindergarten and was failing first grade, she said. By the fifth grade, he was in special education with a learning disability and special needs.

Draper alleged Johnson was sexually abused as a child, nearly drowned by a boyfriend of his mother, and was sexually abused again as an adult in prison. The defendant also attempted suicide twice at the age of 14, was taking LSD and other drugs by 18, had several arrests, failed several drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs, and has never had a stable relationship in his 26 years, she testified.

Under questioning by McCulloch, Draper said the information for the timelines she prepared came from documents, and from interviews with Johnson himself and family members after Johnson's arrest for Casey's murder.

The trial was to resume this morning, with defense testimony from family members of Johnson.

Officials: Body of abducted Wal-Mart employee found

Police say suspect in custody in Arizona
Friday, January 21, 2005 Posted: 12:21 PM EST (1721 GMT)

Earlier, her suspected abductor, Johnny Williams was arrested at a hospital in Willcox, Arizona, where he was being treated for gunshot wounds, police said.

Holden had been missing since Wednesday night, when a man forced her into her truck as she was leaving work and drove off. The incident was captured on video by the store's surveillance system.

Police in Tyler said an officer in Willcox reported seeing Williams driving the red truck up to the hospital, throwing the keys inside the vehicle and going into the facility.

Hospital CEO Chris Cronberg confirmed that a man who appeared to be suffering form gunshot wounds was receiving treatment and was in the custody of local police.

Police in Tyler said Williams claimed he was shot by a man at a gas station near the hospital

Authorities are examining the truck.

Peter Galbreith, an agent with the FBI's Tyler office, said the violent crimes task force was involved in the investigation. The task force includes police, sheriff's officials, the U.S. Marshals service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

Tyler police said that Williams was from the Tyler area, but no further information was immediately available.

The private organization Crimestoppers had offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to Megan or her abductor.

Police in Tyler previously described the Wal-Mart kidnapper as a black man in his early 20s, who was about 6 feet tall and weighed 180 pounds.

The man had walked into the parking lot and spent about two hours loitering there, following some other women before apparently giving up on them, police who saw the surveillance tapes said.

At one point, a private security guard approached the man and spoke to him.

The man also entered the Wal-Mart at one point to use the bathroom, police said.

Various employees saw the man, said Tyler police spokesman Don Martin.

The man was carrying a duffel bag that may have contained a change of clothes, Martin said. At one point on the tape he is seen wearing a red shirt, and later is wearing a black jacket.

"We've got a good clothing description on him. We're gonna try and enhance the facial parts of the videotape," Martin said. A sketch artist was flown in from Houston.

"We're hoping today that through these leads that we might be able to come up with an I.D.," Martin said.

Holden lives with her sister in Chandler, Texas, about 10 miles from the Wal-Mart in Tyler, police said. When she did not arrive home by 3 a.m. Thursday, her sister become worried and called their mother in Henderson, Texas, who called police.

CNN's Ed Lavandera and Mike Brooks contributed to this report.

... but why did you choose to report the racial facts? You could have chosen weight: "280lb man abducts & kills 140lb woman". Or how about "Angry man abducts & kills frightened woman" - You could have reported any of hundreds of "facts" about the situation. That you chose race forces it to be a race issue, at least for you.

I completely agree Sean. Nowhere in the article or subsequent artices does it blatantly report that the victim is white. Why was it neccessary to post the topic as such??? It was poor taste and shameful.
There was a girl kidnapped in broad daylight last year in Florida. She was 13. Her abductor, rapist and ultimate murderer was white...as was she. Does their race matter? Absolutely not. What matters is the story itself. It's sad and sick and the focus should be on the victims and their ordeals...not on the race of their perpetrators. Shame on you sordidmesh.
