I don't know if you have the same sort of thing on your news in the USA, but every day over here our news tells us the number of Australians dead and/ or missing as a result of the Tsunami.
Currently that figure stands at a staggering 14 people dead and 500-odd missing. Oh my God. Fourteen dead! FOURTEEN!? Are they ****ing kidding? How can they justify that being a big deal? When the news in Thailand is broadcasting that 4000+ people are dead, when in Indonesia it's 80000+ dead, our paltry Australian death toll is peanuts.
I am sure the parents and family and friends of those Australians who have died and are missing are obviously very upset, as anyone would be. But I feel kind of guilty when Australia is concentrating so much on the measly 14 deaths we have suffered. Compared to the suffering throughout Asia it really is nothing.
Every night, we are showered with photos of the latest victim who has been identified and stories about how their parents found their body and indentified them from the scar on their ankle and their watch. Stories about their bodies being shipped home and planned funeral services.
We should be thankful that we have the luxury of being able to put a face and body to all of our victims. Thankful that we have so few victims that we can allocate news time to remembering each one of them individually.
Other countries certainly don't have that luxury.
Let's go with this freak show. It's outrageous.
