China's 1.3 billionth citizen, a baby boy, has been born at a hospital in the capital Beijing.

China's Xinhua newsagency says senior Chinese officials were on hand to mark the occasion.

It says China's minister in charge of the State Population and Family Planning Commission, awarded the newborn a certificate designating him as the 1.3 billionth citizen.

China's population is expected to increase by about 10 million people annually to reach a peak of 1.46 billion in the mid-2030s.

India is not far off China in terms of population, I think they have a population of 1 billion and rising fast.
