just a small question, and a bit off topic, but how far does the ricter scale go up to, is it 10? Because i know a hurican have different words to describ the big ones ( like you can get a super tornado, or sunami for a really big wave) does an earthquake have the same kind of thing, or is an earthquake and earthquake, no mater what the size
The thing about earthquakes is that it isn't incremental, it's exponential, or logarithmically (not sure if they are the same or not.
So for each increase of 1 is 10 TIMES stronger. To put it in a speed perspective think of 1 as 1 mile per hour and 2 would be like 10 miles per hour and 3 would be 100 miles per hour.
so if this one is 9.3, it will creat a very big wave indeed ... i know presure waves react differently in water than in air ... just makes a reall, reall big wave.
i think someone said earlier that it was off-shore, but closer to land than the last one ... i think i read somewhere that waves det bigger the further they go? so the closer the quake, the small the wave ... im confused
