I am upset at being reprimanded by Ebay post #1  quote:

for having the audacity to ask on the Ebay message board if pyramid schemes was a legal activity

I now am so angry that I want to fight Ebay. Yet I know that I am no more than the smallest ant being upset at the cosmic comet known as Ebay. I need an opinion as would I should do.
my feeling is to report them to the federal trade commission.

But in truth I have not been harmed. I am just insulted that I got a letter of reprimand for discussing on an ebay message board the illegal activities that might be occurring on Ebay.

At this time steam is still pouring out of my ears.

oh by the way at this time there is over 200 pyramid schemes advertised on ebay but they seem very reluctant to pull them.

Why do I care, you may ask... well I have known people who have been ripped off by such schemes.

as I write this I am cooling down and realize that I should just stop caring because there is nothing I can do about the evil and greedy people that populate our planet.

Karma, you take care of it and it will take care of you.

Can't we all just get along

There's a difference between a "pyramid scheme" and "multi-level marketing". Pyramid schemes are indeed illegal, MLM's are not. There are some very successful MLM companies such as Amway and Mary Kay. You'll have to find out what the differences are between the two models in order to identify illegal pyramid schemes from legal MLM opportunities. Naturally, pyramid schemes should be reported to eBay, and probably even the authorities.

I'm fairly certain that one of the classic defining characteristics of a pyramid scheme is the complete absence of a product. They want you to send money up to the top in return for the "privilege" of joining their network and establishing your own network of individuals below you who send money up to you. They call it a money-making opportunity, but all it ends up being is cashflow that goes up to the top, to the person who started the thing, and the people at the bottom get screwed. It's the people getting screwed that has banned this scheme from practice.

MLM's offer a similarly structured business where commissions float up to the higher levels, but this is no different than a normal corporate structure. Commissions are derived from sales of actual product. Thus nobody gets screwed: you get out of it no more and no less than what you put into it. If you are interested in participating in an MLM, the trick is to find one whose product offering is actually appealing to you, something that you can honestly get excited to talk about and introduce other people to. Because it if you can't get excited about it, you won't be able to excite anyone else about it, period. That's the world of sales.

I got reprimanded because I discussed on ebay's message board (in safe harbor a board discussing fraud and such) someones else's item "for sale" which I believed was a pyramid scheme. I mentioned the # of the "item" which was a no-no according to ebay. I guess I am so used to the freedom to discuss things on message boards that it upset me to get my hand slapped like that.

anyway they did remove that "item" but I found another with the exact same wording you could look at if you want at

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...me=STRK:MEWA:IT

what it says basically is make a list of 5 email address with yours in 5th place (using I guess the previous four email addresses)
then send 5$ to the email address in first place (using paypal)

the only product being sold would be email addresses (I guess)

sounds illegal to me. what do you think?

Yep - that's an illegal pyramid-type chain mail setup. Good call.

I think the Federal Trade Commission would be interested in this.
