Singapore Intensifies Battle Against AIDS
| quote: |
Singapore, facing a rise in AIDS cases, is considering making it compulsory for pregnant women to be screened for HIV/AIDS, an official said on Saturday.
"If all mothers had been tested for HIV, and treatment started for HIV positive mothers, the risk of the baby having AIDS would be reduced from 25 percent to 2 percent," said Balaji Sadasivan, senior minister of state for health, at the fourth Singapore AIDS Conference. |
Here's one of the first examples I've seen implemented along the lines of screening pregnant women for determining whether or not the child should be born on a national scale. HIV/AIDS is just the beginning when it comes to such screening as any of dozens of genetic deficiencies could also be screened at the same time. The regulatory body could come up with any of a thousand reasons for abnormal termination of the pregnancy. I've mentioned before that this type of intervention is exactly what would be required to regulate population growth.
