Wind Industry Bids to Win Over Doubters
| quote: |
| LONDON (Reuters) - The European wind energy industry, thriving as climate change tops the global agenda, says it could eventually supply all the continent's electricity, but must first overcome public resistance over eyesore turbines. |
Honestly, I think public resistance on this matter is not entirely misplaced. While wind power is a somewhat attractive, non-polluting alternative energy source, it is highly inefficient and requires vast armies of turbines which are indeed quite an eyesore. Now whoever says birds are running into them and getting killed is smoking crack, but there are more efficient means of energy production that don't necessarily need to compromise the landscape. As an exmple, the article makes mention of it being an "offshore" wind farm which I have often thought about, but there is another form of energy that is offshore and which doesn't stick up into the sky: ocean currents. But then, of course, we'll be risking the whales bumping their heads on the thing, etc. Though I have to wonder how many whales are killed each year by bumping their heads on the bottoms of boats and ice bergs...
