CHICAGO -- The Rev. Derrick Mosley, known throughout the Chicago area as a self-proclaimed community advocate, was arrested and charged with wire fraud and extortion Monday in an alleged plot to blackmail the wife of a professional athlete.
NBC5 ImageMosley is accused of trying to obtain $20,000 from a business manager representing the athlete's wife, claiming he had a videotape depicting her in a sexual encounter with a musician and another woman, NBC5's Darren Kramer reported. Sources confirmed the musician on the alleged sex tape was R & B star R. Kelly.
According to NBC5's sources, the tape pre-dates the woman's marriage to the unidentified athlete. R. Kelly's manager said Mosley tried to extort money from him in a separate incident. The R & B artist's manager filed for a restraining order against Mosley in 2003, NBC5's Marion Brooks reported.
Mosley appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Morton Denlow in a jogging suit after FBI agents arrested him at his South Side home during the predawn hours.
Federal agents say Mosley told the woman's agent he wanted the money as a counseling fee to help the wife atone for her sins. As part of the deal, Mosley allegedly promised to destroy the videotapes.
Authorities said the woman's business manager, Rufus Williams, recorded conversations with Mosley and then went to the FBI.
In a statement released late Monday, Williams said, "Derrick Mosley did not receive any money from me for his silence. Instead, he was taken into custody by the FBI."
Assistant U.S. Attorney Virginia Kendall told the judge the government would seek to detain Mosley because he was accused of committing the present crime while on supervised release in a bank fraud case.
Denlow ordered Mosley to remain in federal custody pending a detention hearing at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
If found guilty, Mosley could face 22 years in prison, Brooks reported.
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ - In response to media reports concerning a videotape supposedly seized by law-enforcement authorities in connection with an extortion attempt, a spokesman for R. Kelly issued the following statement:
"We have heard second-hand reports that the tape allegedly shows consenting adults, including someone identified as R. Kelly, engaged in sexual activity. Since we haven't seen the tape, we can neither confirm nor deny that it is in fact Mr. Kelly. We can, however, confirm that no one is suggesting the tape depicts anything but the activities of consenting adults."

Old Video Shows Gary Sheffield's Wife With R. Kelly
Yankees slugger Gary Sheffield revealed yesterday he was the victim of a shakedown artist who threatened to release X-rated video of his gospel-singer wife and R. Kelly.
"We will not be blackmailed," said the star right fielder, who was the runnerup in yesterday's American League Most Valuable Player voting. "I have not seen the alleged videotape, nor do I care to," he added in the written statement. "I love my wife and I vow to stand by her through any trial or tribulation."
It all happened before they were married so you'd expect him to stand by her. If he left her because of this, he'd be a pretty rotten husband anyway and she'd be better off without him.
YANKEE'S 'EXTORTIONIST' NEVER EVEN HAD THE VIDEO: PAL
November 22, 2004 -- CHICAGO — He didn't even have the tapes.
Just hours before he allegedly tried to shake down Gary Sheffield over X-rated videos of the slugger's wife, a self-styled activist from Chicago allegedly made a frantic call to a pal in a bid to get the tapes himself, sources said.
Derrick Mosley made the call at 11 p.m. the night before he first contacted Sheffield's agent over the tapes, said a pal.
It was one of several calls he placed during the nine days in which Mosley negotiated with the agent, Rufus Williams, two sources said.
"He was looking for any of the R. Kelly tapes, and I only know of one," said the pal, a well-known community activist who asked to remain anonymous.
"He was frantic . . . He wanted a copy of that tape on the spot."
In the days afterward, Mosley called the pal 15 more times and phoned others who might have had a copy of the tape, the pal said.
The pal did have an old bootleg R. Kelly tape showing three separate sex scenes, one that he said allegedly featured Sheffield's gospel singer wife DeLeon performing oral sex on the R&B crooner.
And he said Mosley insisted on meeting with him that night to discuss getting a copy of the tape.
But his friend refused to give the accused hustler a copy of the tape because he didn't trust his motives, he said.
"He wouldn't tell me what was going on," said the pal. "He said, 'Man, it's going to be big. You should get out in front with me.' "
Over the next week and a half, Mosley called Williams several times in a bid to extort $20,000 from the Sheffields, according the FBI.
Mosley knew about two different tapes in which DeLeon can be seen having sex with Kelly, who dated the gospel star when she was a teen, said the pal who wouldn't give his name.
One was the old tape known as "R. Kelly Triple X." The second was part of a "master tape" featuring numerous encounters, one showing "DeLeon, Kelly and Kelly's wife" having sex, the pal said.
Other sources said several friends of Kelly's had seen the three-way scene but they declined to say whether the third woman was Kelly's wife, Andrea Lee, or his late ex, singing star Aaliyah.
