That's just it! Sawyer is a very human character, and deep down, he genuinely cares. He has a very rough exterior because of the way he's lived. Kate brings the gentler and more loving side out.
Yeah, he's been though a pretty tough time, which probably expains his actions. The big thing and recurring theme is that the island brings out a different side of everyone, so maybe this can be sawyer's chance to be the caring person he wanted to be, or he should be finally.
Saywers actions are all just a front to hide the goodness that lies buried within himself . He will probably do some good stuff later to atone for his previous misdeeds.
