I remember reading something similar to this about an ant colony in southern Europe that went across Spain, France, and to Italy or something along those lines a few years ago.
THE FRIGGIN ANTS ARE GONNA TAKE OVER
for some odd reason, while the word "Ganya" was still just a thought-dropping in my head, I thought it'd only be four letters. But apparently it's five. yep.
I've actually heard that the ants here in Silicon Valley are the same Argentine species and that it's supposedly a single, vast colony stretching up the coastline all the way from Argentina - what I'm curious about though is what characteristics define it as a "single" colony rather than just thousands of small adjacent ones ones? My thought is that perhaps some ants hop from location to location with seemingly no tie to a single spot. If that is the case, then that may make it clear that the ants are evolutionarily lower than the likes of bees who hive together, leaving for supplies and returning with supplies to the same hive to support their queen. Perhaps the ants are incapable of distinguishing one colony from the next and simply pick up on "the ant trail" and follow it along with their genetic clones.. pretty cool though.
