My wife today pointed out something that I thought everyone should think about. There are thousands of viruses on the NET. They are still out there just waiting to crash your computer.
Virus Protection.
If you are not running an Anti-Virus program you are either stupid or a fool.
Do you realize how many viruses have been written? I expect it is in the thousands or maybe even in the tens of thousands.
Question & Answers
Aren't most of them DEAD?
No! Most are still alive and may be on a server somewhere.
If most of them are out there why don't they infect more computers?
Simple reason is Anti Virus programs that stop the infections. It's like getting a Flu Shot. Just getting a Flu Shot doesn't stop people from getting the Flu, but it may stop your family from getting the Flu.
So Anti-Virus programs don't extinguish Viruses?
No they just block them, preventing them from using your computer to spread.
What about a Trojan?
Most Anti-virus programs can't detect most Trojan Horses although they are getting better at it.
What is a Trojan Horse?
It is a little program that will sit in your computer until a specified time. Then at that specified time it starts and does it's damage.
So do I need another program to detect Trojans?
Simple answer is Yes! Trojan Horses are not a prevalent as Viruses.
What about Spyware will my Anti-Virus detect Spyware?
No, you need a different program to detect spyware.
What is spyware?
Spyware is a program designed to gather your surfing habits and possibly pop up advertising.
Is Spyware damaging?
Usually no, but it is quite annoying.
Do you have questions about Viruses, Trojan Horses or Spyware?
Yesterday I got a trojan through my temporary internet files...dont know how...but I scanned my system, and found 4...I qurantines them and then deleted my temp internet files....
I noticed that you said that a person would need to put another type of protector on to find these trojans....do you have one you would recommend?
How does a trojan get through temp internet files..and the worst part is that I dont know anything about them until I check my e-mail. The minute I checked my e-mail..my anti-virus system came on to notify me that I had a virus.
How are e-mail and temp internet files connected?
So..tonight, I had the same thing happen to me...but I did a scan of my computer and it said I had no viruses...but my activity log through my anti-virus system says I have one in my temp internet files again.
If the scanner through my anti-virus system doesnt show it, but the activity log shows it...how do I get rid of it if it isnt showing me where it is? I deleted my temp internet files again hoping that its there....but if the scan of my computer shows nothing..how do I know Ive gotten rid of it?
Any help you can offer would be great!

Microsoft incorporates Outlook and IE together so that you are able to view HTML encoded emails through Outlook.
Some have suggested using a seperate Anti-Trojan software However some Anti-virus software's have Anti-trojan's built in. Al be it a little weak but they work ok. Sounds to me like whatever you use does do a trojan scan.
A Trojan can be embedded in just about any software but most come in with email these days.

One thing you can do is look up the name of the virus on one of the anti-virus websites like Symantec, Cheyenne or AVG. A lot of time they will have cleaners for specific trojans.
I use Norton and I have that definition in my anti-virus system. I thought it wouldnt slip in...its such an old virus. I would have thought it would detect it before it came through...
Ill check out those sites.

I have heard that Spybot: Search and destroy is also good.
It sounds like a game, but it is not.
Mystic, that is why Trojans are called so, because they have viri or worms hidden inside, and they can sneak in without being detected easily.
It seems to me that one of your email messages might be infected. Run a scan on them exclusively and keep your virus definitions updated.

Thanks M...
My definitions are updated all the time, and I have my anti-virus set on my e-mail to not let through infected mails...
I have spybot also...and a firewall.
I might have to get that separate anti-trojan software that Ron talked about...I didnt even know they had something like that until I read this thread.
