I think the who occlumency thing was a disaster because of Snape's grudge against against Harry's father. And Harry didn't put any effort into learning it. Even the best teachers can't teach a child who doesn't want to learn.

Yet another great thought Mike. I also think that Harry had to see that James was all to human, not some super guy that did no wrong. There is not always black and white alone. There is a gray area too.
