I think that the insinuation that Germany was liberated following the defeat of the Nazi regime as a result of the D-Day invasion discounts all responsibility that the people of Germany had in WW2. It is the equivalent of saying that they were under the rule of an evil dictator who was the solely responsible for the atrocities committed by Germany.
I don't believe this to be true. Whie indeed there were Germans in Germany at the time of Hitler's rule who did not agree with his policies and actions, it is unfair and irresponsible to lay the blame for Germany's actions solely on his head. It discounts the huge, overwhelming and popular support that existed for Hitler at the time of his rule.
Liberated? No. Defeated? Yes.
