I think that religions plays a HUGE part in wars. It's at the root of so many different beliefs, customs, etc... and it has caused man to clash since the beginning.

Interestingly enough, Islam spread predominantly through the use of warfare.
Another reason is the desire to conquer more land, and more valuable land.
Japan makes a very good example. In both the First and Second World Wars, Japan invaded Manchuria. It invaded for 2 reasons. Japan needed more room for its booming population. It also needed a ready supply of oil. Manchuria's oil fields fir the bill nicely.

I don't think you can attribute the cause of war solely to certain influential and powerful individuals. For many people in positions of power, it was their policies or views on war and national goals that got them into power in the first place. One person cannot wage a war - it takes national and popular support in addition to common goals shared by many.
I think religion, land and natural resources are certain contributors to the causes of war. Perhaps misinformation, prejudice, socialisation and conditioning to racism and other forms of hatred, but again, many of these can be attributed to religion and cultural differences.
