Ghosts often get blamed for strange happenings in a home or for mysterious splotches on family snapshots. But here are come more earthly explanations....
What believers say: Strange noises and cold spots means a ghost is in the house.
What researchers say: It's nocoincidence that many supposdedly haunted houses are old. Noises such as moans and creaks often happend when the temperature or humidity changes in an older building. Researchers have traced many ghostly cold spots to simple drafts and many loud knocks to noisy pipe. The banging sounds at one Scottish "haunting" were caused by a trapped rat. In another house, a door that kept shutting itself was just being pushed by an unnoticed breeze from cracked windows.
"Ghost sightings" also often occur at night, when it;s hard to be sure of what you're seeing and everything seems extra creepy. Also, if someone tells you that a place is haunted, it may make you more likely to think ordinary noised and chilly rooms are something supernatural.
What believers say" Blurry shaped and weird lights that sometimes show up in photographs are ghosts that have been caught on film.
What researchers say: There's a much simpler explanation. Often, the mysterious images are caused by the flash bouncing off an object—such as a camera strap, a bug, hair, or dust—that's in front of the lens. In many cameras the viewfinder does not see the same thing as the lens, so you might not realize that there's something in your photo. Film defects and fog on the lens can also create spooky snapshots. Even someone's breath caught on a cold night can create an eerie cloud. So the next time something strange happens at home, look for a more down-to-earth cause before blaming a nonexsistent ghost.
It is folly to punish your neighbor by fire when you live next door.
