Favorite "Star Trek: TNG" episode(s)? post #1  quote:

i know, i know. they're all so good it's almost impossible to pick a favorite.

i love "darmok". it's the one where picard and an alien captain are stranded on a planet and they can't communicate because the aliens only speak in metaphors: "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra", "Shaka. When the walls fell." and stuff like that.

and i think that all the "Q" episodes are good, too.

i just hope my wife never sees me hovering over my TNG dvd's doing my gollum impersonation: "my precioussssssessess!!!"

I find the TV series box sets to be disappointingly expensive - I won't have anything to do with them. I stood there staring at 8 seasons worth of TNG and added up over $1000 in just TV shows on disc - sorry, but I can think of a lot better things to spend that kind of money on. Further, I felt that a significant number of TNG episodes were weak stories, poorly written, and just plain not entertaining. Perhaps one in ten stood out to me as being clever and intriguing. So if I could have a custom box set with those one in ten episodes at one tenth the cost.. then perhaps indeed.

At any rate, my favorite TNG episodes..

I liked the one where Troi found herself in disguise on a Romulan warship as a "Taush Yar" (sp?) and had to wing her way through a fake power trip and get the Romulan crew to perform her bidding.

Also the one where Reginald Barkley became super-intelligent and set himself up a mind-scanning interface on the Holodeck and took over the ship, taking them for the ride of their lives beyond Warp 10.

I also dug the one with the Dyson Sphere where they found Mr. Scott marooned on the outer surface where he had locked himself into a cyclic transporter loop for hundreds of years.

I recall enjoying most of the episodes that featured other Nunian Tsung androids such as Lor and Lol.

Heh.. and when Captain Picard was kidnapped and sent down to a planet's surface with the opposing ship's captain to face a common enemy together, "Darmack and Gillard at Tenagra! Shaka, when the walls fell!"

sean: to each his own. i grew up with them and they are my favorite TV series of all time. $700 (7 seasons, $100/box set plus a nice set of documentaries in each set) isn't all that much for what you get if you're a huge fan like i am. and you don't have to spend $700 on them all at once!

plus, to me it's worth 1/2 the money just to get rid of all those vhs tapes i had from recording them off the TV.

True enough. My background is in media production and I was an early DVD adopter and technology advocate (had one of the first few DVD support sites on the web with DVD reviews and such, so did Marc). When I look at box sets like these all I see is price gauging. The studios need to look at the likes of The Simpsons and Southpark TV series boxes where the series costs 30-40 bucks. THAT is reasonable to me. The studios make TONS of money off of syndication. They don't need to try and triple their profits with over-priced DVD's. Sometimes it seems like they do zero market research.

I liked the episode when Q was dating Picards woman (Vash?), and he slams the whole Enterprise crew into a Robin Hood senario.

I remember Worf saying, "Captain, I must protest, I am not a merry man!"

That whole episode is my favorite.

One of my favorite Worf episodes was the one with his Ascension Ceremonry. He was such a moody bastard that it was funny as hell to see him with a happy glint in his eye and even crack a highly satisfactory grin now and again.

Larke, I remember when that was in the news. There was a small bit of controversy because Entertainment Tonight is owned by Paramount, the owner of course of Star Trek .

Why anyone would be upset by that, I don't know.

Everytime that episode comes on I look for John Tesh, and I can't make him out. Too much makeup on everybody.

I need to tape it and slow it down so I can take some time and see which one he is.

yeah, what was up with the controversy? i mean, john was in full makeup, doesn't speak (unless a klingon grunt counts) and isn't even mentioned in the credits. much ado about nothing.

i like any of the q episodes. i think my fave of those was the one where Q gets stripped of all his powers, and pretty much every being he ever messed with was out to get him. then at the end, he gets his powers back, and Q has a merry little revenge time.
