Question tax questions post #5  quote:

Hi, I really need some tax advise. I have 3 kids and didn't work most of the year, until the end, and my income is only about 2560.00 for 2003. I have read about the earned income credit and the child tax credit, and i think I qualify for at least one of those. But I dont know how much I could actually get back. My ex want to claim my daughter this year, and I dont know whether or not to let him, because I thought i read that 3 or more is the child tax credit., But I doubt it would be possible to get a refund that large with such a minimal income. Or is it? could you please help me with this?

Rena.

post #7  quote:

You can't deduct mileage or anything related to job-hunting. Deductions come in the form of student expense aid, donations to non-profit organizations, expenses incurred for purposes of business. Looking for a job is not a line of business. If you have an actual legal business for which you perform services and/or resell goods, then expenses related to those operations may be deducted.

As for the person with the $26K truck and the $15K outstanding taxes, the answer is a resounding NO. Even if your truck was a work related tax write-off, the change is in TAX is not the retail price of the vehicle. So if the truck is $26K and you paid 10% tax on it ($2.6K), then $2.6K is the amount that comes out of your taxes, lessening what you owe to $12.4K. Writeoffs are in terms of TAX value, not sticker price.

And to the gal asking about the 3 kids there, you only made $2.5K the whole year, you can't have paid more than $250 in taxes - your refund will not exceed the amount that you PAID in taxes. The whole point of tax returns is to give you back any amount of dollars that you PAID, but do not actually owe. So if you paid $250 in taxes, the most you can hope to get back is ALL of it: $250. Don't hold your breath thinking you're in for some "big return" - the only people who get "big returns" are the ones who paid "big taxes" all year long.

rena - Well I don't think that's exactly a "refund" - certainly sounds like some sort of "tax credit", but indeed - congrats: don't spend it all in one place.
