Genuine? I don't know, maybe if you're a 'Cat Whisperer' you can know for sure Kidding.
I mean, I think dogs and cats have affection for people, but when it comes down to it they just want food. I mean, if you die in your sleep, give cats or dogs long enough, and they'll start eating you.
HECK, I have a cat that actually tries to help when you are sick. I passed out once or twice due to low blood pressure, and he went and got someone else in the house to help me. He is one in a Million.
I had this one cat, Cheeto (R.I.P., Cheet), who didn't like normal affection. He would not allow anyone to hold him, or pick him up. When he wanted attention, he would anounce it as he walked up to me with a loud 'meow'. This most likely happened when I was trying to sleep. He would perch himself next to me or on my chest and purr. That means it's time for me to pet him, otherwise he was going to stand there and meow.
Sometimes I thought he wanted food, or he wanted to go outside, so I'd get up. He just looked at me like I was an idiot. Silly cat.
He died though. I miss Cheeto, he had a great personality.
He loved to scratch and bite... "love" bites we called them because he only scratched or bit you when you tried to get away...
