NBC's 'Average Joe: Hawaii' sequel to premiere January 5
By Steve Rogers, 12/01/2003
Hot on the heels of its currently airing hit Average Joe series, NBC has announced that it will premiere Average Joe: Hawaii, the second installment of the series, on Monday, January 5 (10-11 PM ET).
... In anticipation of hit ratings and looking to prevent the participants from having previous knowledge of the program's twists and turns, NBC had already filmed a second edition of the series before the first edition premiered on November 3.
"As soon as we saw the first tapes of the original Average Joe, we knew there was rich potential for a second helping of this twisted take on the dating show. The fact that we taped both series before either hit the air allows for the surprise twists to hit the new participants with the same impact they had on the original show," said Jeff Zucker, President, NBC Entertainment.
In the second edition of the series, the crown of Average Joe's former beauty queen and NFL cheerleader Melana Scantlin, is passed on to another as-of-yet unrevealed former Miss USA contestant and model, who is swept away to a secluded island paradise with the promise of romance to be found among a group of 18 Prince Charmings. With no way of knowing the secret twist to Average Joe in advance, the new beauty must decide how to proceed when she meets the unexpected group of guys with big personalities, but admittedly average looks, ranging from a 5-foot-3 engineer to 340 pound sewage contractor.
While finding themselves on what one dismayed Average Joe describes as "nerd island," the guys happily greet their beauty unaware that in a few short weeks a group of eight traditional dating-show-studs will join the competition to vie for her affection.
As the series proceeds, new takes on the twists of "Average Joe" are in store for the audience along with brand new dramatic surprises; and tensions between the two groups of men reach new levels in several emotionally charged 'joe' vs. 'jock' showdowns.

I can't see myself falling victim to the second installment of NBC's dissapointing "AVERAGE JOE". What a let down the first one was. How wonderful it would have been to see Melana run away with an average joe and not a super model. I think it is going to take me awhile to get over number one....
I was very, very dissapointed in last nights show. I was really hoping that Melana would leave with Adam. However, they did portray her as being happier with Jason and a bit frustrated with Adam. She made no attempt to "naturally" throw herself on him. But I thought it would come down to the wonderful editing and surprise us in the end with her choosing Adam.
I also thought that it was tacky for Jason to come down from the plane to kind of "pour more salt into the wound". I was kind of hoping upon seeing that, that there would be some twist and Jason admit that he was a decoy and Adam was the real winner after all. Like a way to test Adam to do everything he could to prove his feelings for Melana. My heart was aching and I was numb as time went on and nothing like that happened.
It seems that Melana chose from her heart. I don't think they should have brought the "hunks" on. It didn't seem fair. But, she chose who she'd be more comfortable with and I respect that, even though I was dissapointed.
Lets see how this next gal does. She's another beauty pageant winner. And she happened to crown Melana as her successor the year she won Miss Missouri. She's a beauty. I'm sure I'll watch that one too.
We watched it lastnight and there is maybe one guy who is possibly physically attractive. Most of the guys are super mega dorks, even more than the first show. I know that this chick (who is prettier than Melena) will pick one of the hunky supermodels.
It's all very lame but still strangely attracting me to the tv every week. Help us all!

I got a phone call and missed much of it ... wonder if they'll re-broadcast it ... I think they did with AJ1.
I did see the crop of average suitors and the only one I can remember now is the screwball who nobody wanted to bunk with him ... the one who was jumping around on the furniture. I hope the other guys don't kill him ...
I saw the looks on her face as each guy emerged, but missed her private comments and the interaction at the cocktail party. Do you all agree with the ones she dumped ?
I do wish they would balance this show and bring in guys who whose looks and personalities range from 1's to 10's.

...I saw the premeire of Avg Joe II tonite...and I knew from the start that the guy with the big HERPES sore on his lip would be the first to go..and he was....the girl herself was pretty cute...the majority of the guys were speechless when they saw her...collectively they all seemed pretty pathetic...individually even more so....i have to say I am hooked on this second run...I never watched the first one so the idea of it is fresh to me...however, my rational mind knows that these guys dont have a chance a model type guy will get her...
It's the truth that the TRUTH makes them so uptight!
