Week 10 on Survivor (11/20/03) post #1  quote:

  • Having trouble sleeping, Rupert finds a spot on a log near camp and has a heart-to-heart chat with a faraway loved one.
  • A trip to fetch water becomes an opportunity for one pair, with questionable fates, to hatch a new plan and turn the tide in their favor. Will their powers of persuasion work?
  • Lillian has a slight anxiety attack.
  • One castaway gives selflessly to another.

Wow... they showed Lill in the previews for next week, and she looked really upset! Wonder what that was all about. I know that I really liked her a lot, during that breakfast with Burton, when she said that she wouldn't be okay about telling lies. Good for her. She's a good person, with a strong character. I hope that she's okay.

I wonder who the "pair" will be that goes for a walk and trys to come up with a new plan. Wonder if it will be two people that you wouldn't think would pair up!!!

Rupert talking to Balboa the snake ?

T and Darrah would seem the obvious, as the last of the core Morgans, but it's hard to call since all of their fates are questionable for a variety of reasons.

Really ... you can pair any of them with another and say "two with questionable fates". Look:

    - T .. One of 2 remaining Morganites.

    - Darrah .. One of 2 remaining Morganites.

    - Rupert because he knows he's a major threat now and at the end.

    - Lil because she's a 2nd hand rose and nobody really likes her.

    - Burton because he's a physical threat and a 2nd hand snake and there is probably resentment.

    - Christa because of her known alliance with Rupert and Sandra ... and she knows if T & Darrah team with Lil, Burton and maybe Jon she, Rupert and Sandra are gone.

    - Sandra for some of the same reasons as Christa, and also she knows both Jon and Burton have strong feelings against her.

    and

Jon ... because he knows he's Jon ?

  • Lillian has a slight anxiety attack.

Lillian may find work later as the poster-person for anti-anxiety meds.

  • One castaway gives selflessly to another.

This may be Rupert -- again -- but again, that's what they want us to think.

Maybe someone gives a family contact reward to someone else ? Maybe Jon to Lil and that's why she's crying ?

Maybe someone gives immunity to someone else ? If Rupert does that, it would be a foolish mistake.

KJ ... maybe you didn't notice, but at breakfast with Burton, Lil said she wouldn't be okay with lying ... but then she LIED TWICE at the Immunity Challenge when she put those coconuts in Burton's trough !!!

AND ... she's also a BAD liar. She agreed to let Burton handle the "lie" stuff about their interaction at breakfast, then did that obvious wink-wink thing and lied while giving him the coconuts !

I'm sure she's physically fine, not sure about the rest.

Maybe the water-seeking pair are Lil and Jon and she's blubbering stuff because he's telling her a new plan and some actions she'll have to take to make it much further in the game ?

-- By the way when I was upset and would start blubbering about something, my Dad used to tell me to go take a look in the mirror. Remembering that "advice" has saved me from public displays a number of times

No, I don't agree. So what if she was putting coconuts in Burtons thing. She was trying to get immunity for herself. They ALL were. Please... Burton is a backstabbing, lying, egotistical jerk.

KJ ... I am not sure what we don't agree on ... but we absolutely DO agree that Burton is a snake. In fact, I think at this point, if I had to vote for least favorite of this survivor cast, it would be a toss up between Burton and Osten.

Anyway, I realize that Lil was trying for immunity -- but my point was that she said to Burton that she couldn't lie -- would have a problem lying -- and then she lied twice -- and did a bad job of it to boot.

No matter how we look at it ... Lil lied. Whether at breakfast, she lied to Burton about not being able to lie ... or lied at the Immunity Challenge about how she and Burton had interacted at breakfast ... she lied

The ony difference is I'm looking at Lil with a cloud over my perspective because she has disappointed me -- and you view Lil with sunshine in the picture.

Maybe it's just geography ... after all you are in sunny San Diego and I'm in the inclement Midwest.

Anyway ... thanks for the opportunity to clarify.

I'm unsure here... what, at the immunity challenge did Lil lie about? I don't recall... by putting in coconuts in Burton's bin? I'm not viewing her with sunshine. I think that woman needs some sunshine put where it doesn't shine if you catch my meaning. I just think that she was put in a bad situation with Burton. Everyone in this game is a liar. The object of the entire game is to make it to the final and be the winner of the million dollars. You will do whatever it takes. That's why I don't get these people making pacts, etc... because they are ALL going to break them. I don't think that I've seen two people keep a pact since Survivor: Australia, with Tina and Colby. Those two made a pact in the beginning of the game, and they kept to it, and never told anyone about it. They each made a promise to the other, and never backed out.

I'll try to recap it

When they were walking on the beach to the boat and breakfast Burton & Lil were talking tactics, and Burton told Lil that the Rupert, Sandra, Christa alliance was a threat to their ( B & L's) own advancement in the game and that they should boot Rupert first.

Once they arrived at the breakfast beach Lil suggested a toast to the Drake tribe, but Burton overruled her and said something like " Screw Drake ... To the Outcasts! " Following up on the previous boot Rupert disussion, Burton told Lil that if Rupert wins immunity, they should boot Christa as Plan B. Burton then told Lil that [to accomplsh this] she needs to befriend Christa and convince her that she is willing to vote whatever way Christa wants.

That's when Lil said that Burton was asking her to lie and that she "will have a problem with" lying.

Burton later said that he wanted the top three to be the two of them plus Jon. She said she was willing to go along with the plan, but that she would need him to "hand-feed" her.

Burton claimed he would just tell the others she babbled on about boy scouts and he fell asleep. Lil was apparently fine with this lie, and asked Burton to make her out to be a dumb broad and not a b**ch.

So at breakfast, Lil has said
1) She has a problem with lying and
2) She doesn't want people to think she's a b**ch

--- Now ... at the Coconut Immunity Challenge, around Question 5 or 6

In line with the "we didn't talk tactics " thing from breakfast,

Lil gave a coconut to Burton and said something like "that's the penalty for making me do all the talking [at breakfast] while you just sat there nodding."

Then Lil was apparently thrilled with the "success" of her lie about the lack of conversation at the reward meal, because she decided to give another coconut to Burton, claiming to "still be pissed about the breakfast".

Hmmm, Lil wasn't having such a very big problem with lying at that moment, was she?

Also, remember at breakfast, Lil had asked Burton to make her out to be a dumb broad and not a b**ch ?

Well, ... upon receiving that 2nd coconut, Burton says to Lil "payback is a b**ch", to which Lil responds, "so am I".

So, I guess she changed her mind ?

I'm not viewing her with sunshine. I think that woman needs some sunshine put where it doesn't shine if you catch my meaning. I just think that she was put in a bad situation with Burton.

I catch your meaning Personally, I think that either Lil is totally crazy ... or as they say "crazy like a fox" and she's playing the hell out of this second chance at the game ... in a completely new way !

Everyone in this game is a liar. The object of the entire game is to make it to the final and be the winner of the million dollars. You will do whatever it takes. Those two made a pact in the beginning of the game, and they kept to it, and never told anyone about it. They each made a promise to the other, and never backed out.

Well since they ALL know that they themselves, as well as All the others are going to break their pacts, I guess figuring out who to trust/not trust at any given point is part of the strategy ?

Hah ! Could it be that Lil's " I can not tell a lie" platform is a strategic move and saying "I can not tell a lie" is the biggest lie of all !

post #9  quote:

ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY

As morning crept into the Balboa tribe, Jon Dalton, the 29-year-old art consultant from Danville, Virginia, was annoyed by the arrogance within the alliance between Christa, Rupert and Sandra. While Jon and Burton Roberts, the 31-year-old marketing executive from San Francisco, California, fetched water, they devised a plan to break this powerful troika. The key to their plan was to recruit ex-Morgan members Darrah Johnson, the 22-year-old mortician from Liberty, Mississippi, and Tijuana Bradley, the 27-year-old pharmaceutical sales representative from St. Louis, Missouri. It was now just a question of timing. "We didn't know when to tell Tijuana and Darrah that the plan is to flip on our original alliance," explained Burton.

AN OFFER THEY CAN'T REFUSE

When Rupert went fishing and Christa and Sandra went to get lemons, a window of opportunity opened for Jon and Burton to enlist Darrah and Tijuana into their new alliance. Already on the chopping block due to their Morgan affiliations, Darrah and Tijuana were elated to accept the offer, which gave them both a new lease on life. "I was down in the dumps, thinking that I was going to go home, but all of a sudden that changed. Now I'm ready to stay," exclaimed a rejuvenated Darrah.

REWARD CHALLENGE: RATS IN THE RIGGING

The tribe converged on the beach to find the wreck of an old Spanish galleon, which would serve as the location for the Reward Challenge. Host Jeff Probst explained that the Challenge involved an obstacle course, which included racing up a cargo net, swinging on a rope to the other side of the ship, climbing up to a crow's nest and sliding down a large canvas sail. The castaways would team up in pairs to compete in two rounds, with the winning teams advancing to play each other. The winning team of the final round would enjoy a reward of a day at sea on a luxury catamaran with pizza and beer.

The first round was a close race between Burton and Lill versus the coupling of Christa and Darrah. Darrah missed a rope-toss from Christa, which cost the pair just enough time to allow Burton and Lill to advance to the final round.

The second round was the team of Rupert and Jon versus Tijuana and Sandra. When Rupert and Jon took a large lead, it looked all but over for T and Sandra. But Jon forgot to ring the bell, thus he had to retrace his steps, which narrowed the gap. In the end, though, it was too little too late for T and Sandra, as Rupert and Jon won by a nose.

The final round was Burton and Lill vs. Rupert and Jon. Jeff Probst made the competition more difficult by telling the castaways that they had to collect bags full of puzzle pieces that would have to be assembled at the end of the course. Both teams made quick work of the course, with Burton excelling at untying the knots. It was a dead even finish until Burton and Lill put the final piece of the puzzle in place, thus winning it all. Burton chose to give his reward to Jon, while Lill decided to keep the reward for herself.

SOMETHING IS ROTTEN IN THE STATE OF BALBOA

Upon returning from the Challenge, Rupert seethed with anger because he felt something was amiss. His trust in Burton was thinning, because Burton had given his reward to Jon when Rupert felt it was owed to him. Meanwhile, Lill was consumed with guilt and felt horrible about accepting the Reward rather than giving it away. "I should've sent Rupert on it, and I didn't. I'm such a *****," cried Lillian.

LILL AND JON SAIL AWAY

Boarding the luxurious catamaran, Lill and Jon enjoyed pizza and beer while discussing strategy. Jon explained how he would coach Lill in the art of deception so that she could convince Rupert, Christa and Sandra that she's with them while actually being part of the Burton-Tijuana-Darrah-Jon conspiracy. Feeling the wind in their hair, Lill and Jon fished, but eventually they came back to camp empty-handed, much to the dismay of their tribemates. Rupert immediately lobbied Lill for her loyalty. Rupert fell for Lill's deceptive reassurance, remarking, "I know now that Lill be wholehearted with me."

IMMUNITY CHALLENGE: KILLER

When Balboa reconvened for the Immunity Challenge, Jeff Probst explained that they were to compete in a cutthroat game of skill using blowguns. On a large target, each Survivor was designated a colored area. The goal would be to knock out all the other players by blowing darts onto the other castaway's areas. The last player in the game would win.

Rupert proved to be quite the blowgun marksman by immediately hitting the target where he intended. Christa and Tijuana had trouble even hitting the board. Christa and Darrah were eliminated first, and the game moved on with Burton being the best marksman in the field. As it came down to Lill, Jon and Burton, it was clear that the alliance of Rupert, Christa and Sandra would not have Immunity that evening. In the end, Burton used his accuracy to win Immunity, thus guaranteeing himself three more days as a Balboa tribe member.

JON AND BURTON CONTROL THE GAME

With their alliance set in stone, Jon and Burton had Rupert right where they wanted him. Everyone, including Darrah, pretended that Darrah was to be voted off. Not trusting this situation and confident that Lill was in his pocket, Rupert constructed alternative scenarios: "If they turn and they've gotten Darrah, T, Jon and Burton together on one side, I've got my four on my side, and we'll have a tie."

The one scenario Rupert did not plan on was that Lill would stab him in the back and write down his name. In a five-to-three vote, Rupert became the ninth castaway voted off SURVIVOR: PEARL ISLANDS. Rupert also became the second member of the Jury, which will ultimately decide who will win the million-dollar prize and the title of Sole Survivor.
