I believe that we are over taxed. Of course England is worse then the US.
Anyway I ended up having to pay thousands of dollars of state tax that I didn't owe because they didn't believe that I was not in business. I closed my business in July 1993 and had to pay taxes thru 1994 to the tune of, well let's just say it was thousands. Needless to say I no longer live in that state and don't wish to go back there to live. The state I am in now did something dirty, not to me though. We pay local/county taxes which get sent to the state. The state is then suppose to take their share then send the county their share. Well since the state has a huge deficit they just decided to keep the county's share. Sound like the state embezzled the funds from the county and got away with it.
I don't like the Federal, but at least I can point to something I like, like the military spending or interstate highways and say I helped pay for that.
The state takes your pay, and you get little or nothing in return.
Here's something that Ohio does that gripes me. They will not audit your taxes until 3 1/2 years after you file. (The Statute of Limitation is 4 years) then they send you a letter that you messed up your taxes and you owe. But their letter is so cryptic that it looks like they owe you and are sending you a check. Meanwhile you forget about it then 8 years later you get a letter from the State Attorney saying now you have interest and penalties. Meanwhile you receive a State Tax Refund for years afterward that they could have just taken. That happened to me on my 1995 tax return.
Then on my 1998 Tax return I sent the 1/10 what I owed them expecting them to send a notice that I owed the rest then I would arrange to make payments. They didn't, in fact they didn't send anything, just let it ride and build interest and penalties. Again they didn't even take my refund for the 1999 taxes.
Ron Ackerman said this in post #1 : You know what I hate worse than Federal Taxes?
State and local taxes.

you must be from california. and yer talking about ERAF.
I think there should be one SALES/VAT tax. 25% of it goes directly to your community (township/town/city). 25% goes to your county. 25% goes to your State. 25% goes to the Feds.
Our local communities should be getting more of the taxes we pay, and should be providing for more of our services. That gives the taxpayers more control over how our taxes are spent. The Feds should only be paying for national stuff -- like defense and interstate highways.
Being a congressman, either state or federal, should be a part-time job, like it was in the early years of this country.
If you don't want to pay state tax, move to NV or De and other localities with not much services. VAT or flat tax would drive those lower income, those working to realize that those sitting on their duffs are paying less such as those super high income who doesn't consume much of goods and services.
