11.10.03 - Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer confirmed the worst kept secret in San Diego sports on Monday when he announced that Doug Flutie will be the Chargers’ starting quarterback when they take on the Broncos at Denver this Sunday.
Flutie was terrific in Sunday’s 42-28 win over Minnesota, passing for two touchdowns and running for two more. After the game, Schottenheimer, who stopped just short of committing to Flutie for this week, didn’t have the same problem on Monday.
“I just wanted to give everybody an opportunity to enjoy yesterday’s success,” explained Schottenheimer. “And let’s face it, it was an outstanding performance overall. His ability to create was a significant part of our offense’s performance.”
Even more impressive was Flutie’s ability to get the most out of his teammates. The Chargers could do nothing wrong offensively against the Vikings, setting season-highs in total yardage (458), first downs (26) and third down percentage (67%). The 42 points were the most by any Chargers team in nearly a decade.
“It’s amazing how fast the mood changes in our business,” said Schottenheimer. “It was terrific to be back at home. The fans, in my opinion, always can make a difference, and I thought they did yesterday. Of course, it was an exciting football game. We were lively on both ends of what we were doing.
“Defensively, we gave up yardage, but the plan going in was really twofold. Number one, we were going to do everything we could to keep Randy Moss from beating us, and we were going to concede some things in the running game. We succeeded at that.
“Offensively, the whole idea was to take care of the ball and not give their offense more opportunities. If you would have told me that we would lose the time of possession (battle), I would have thought it would have been much more difficult to prevail. But we managed to get that done because the offense was so efficient.”
Added Schottenheimer: “We’ve been working hard on the penalty thing and we’ve got that down to a reasonable number over the past few weeks. We’ve given up the ball one time in the last two weeks and we just have to keep working on (that)….take care of the ball and don’t put yourself in those critical third down and forever situations…because it’s pretty hard to overcome that.
“And of course, Doug played terrific. He made most of the throws that he had to make and made good decisions. But everybody played better on offense.”
Just like last week, Schottenheimer has committed to Flutie for this Sunday’s game only, preferring to keep the decision on a week-to-week basis.
“We’ll take it one week at a time,” said Schottenheimer.
