By now we all know that the series centers around the day that Harry lost his parents. There are so many mysteries. Let us start with this one. Professor Mc Gonagall sits at the Dursley house all day waiting for news. Hagrid brings Harry to Privet Drive. Where and what was Harry doing all day long? Did Dumbledore place a memory charm on him so that he does not remember that day? Who was with Harry? Was it Dumbledore or was it Hagrid guarding him. We know it was not Sirius? Thoughts?
hmmmm
oh... hmm... perhaps Harry was by himself all that time.... but that's a good question, why wasn't he taken directly to the Dursley's when they foudn him?
And one important question is why McGonagall was so intent on watching the Dursleys or atleast waiting... hmm...
head too foggy to think of a better response than that right now... next time. But anyways, good question.

I think that McGonagall was at the Dursley's, in her animagus form, because she was to make sure that no one showed up that was with Voldemort. They had no way of knowing that Voldemort, or the death eaters, didn't know that Harry lived. Or, that he was being taken to a relatives.

I think that Hagrid took Harry to Dumbledore for the day and that Dumbledore did a memory charm on him. It is possible that Dumbledore sent him to a safe location with Hagrid so that he could set up the security perimeter around the Dursley house. Mc Gonagall, being a member of the order, gives us a huge clue that the order only knew rumors. Dumbledore, once again, is the key to the mystery.
why would Dumbledore need to put a memory charm on Harry? he was just a little baby and for his age, he does remember that day quite well .. doesn't he?
already in the first book, he remembers that green light and when the dementors close on him in the third book, he remembers even more .. voices and laughter ..
for Harry being only a year or even younger (i don't remember), this is quite good ..
as for the day, i don't really know what could have happened .. it does sound though as if Hagrid went to Godric's Hollow and took Harry and came straight to the Dursley's with him, maybe the places are so far apart, that it takes quite a while, even with a flying motorcycle ..

i don't think McGonagall was thinking about Death Eaters running around Privet Drive .. she was sitting there waiting, because Hagrid told her that Dumbledore would be there sometime that day .. she found out about James' and Lily's death and Harry having survived from Dumbledore himself (remember?) .. and only then did she realise that Dumbledore planned to leave Harry with the Dursleys ..
