Is Carolina's defense dominant enough to slow down Indianapolis' sizzling offense?
No.
Don't misunderstand. I think Carolina's defense is exceptional, but this is just not a good match for it. Sure, the Panthers should be able to shut down the Colts' running game, even if Edgerrin James is able to return to the lineup and play at or near top form. Yet, it likely will go overboard to take away the deep pass with soft zone coverage, and Peyton Manning should be able to complete passes at will underneath while his receivers produce nice gains after the catch. If the Panthers decide they have to tighten things up, Manning will simply go over the top to Marvin Harrison for a touchdown bomb ... or two ... or three.
Carolina will attempt to eat up as much time as it can by pounding the ball with Stephen Davis. However, the Monday night points fest against Tampa Bay notwithstanding, the Colts defense can be fairly solid, especially in the red zone. And Manning & Co. simply will make too many big plays whenever they're on the field for the Panthers' anemic offense to keep up.
