Take a Texan to School Day
September 2, 2003
Ten Texans went back to school Tuesday as guests of students who wrote winning essays for the club's second annual Take a Texan to School Day.
Ten Houston-area students trumped their classmates in Show and Tell Tuesday, bringing a Texans player to their school as part of Take a Texan to School Day.
Tackle Chester Pitts went to Houston's St. Cecilia School to visit first grader Erin Guerre, who, like the other selected students, submitted an essay on why she wanted a Texans player to visit.

Andre Johnson was one of 10 Texans to go back to school.
Pitts presented Guerre with a gift bag in her classroom, then spoke at an assembly which featured a cheerleader routine in his honor.
"This takes me back," Pitts said. "I can't remember the last time I was in a gymnasium."
Wide receiver Andre Johnson journeyed to Law Elementary where first-grader Kord Douglas was the school's winning essay writer.
Johnson spoke to an auditorium full of students about his post with the Texans and winning seasons with the Miami Hurricanes in college. Johnson then escorted Douglas to his classroom where he visited with the small first grade class.
The Texans rookie wide receiver impressed the youngsters with his 40-yard dash speed and also told them about his upcoming family reunion on Sunday when the Texans travel to Miami for their season opener.
While math was his favorite subject in elementary school, Johnson told the children that education is still important to him, even though he entered the NFL Draft early as a junior.
"Since I entered the draft early, I wasn't able to graduate at Miami," Johnson said. "But I'm still going to finish my degree even now that I'm playing for the Texans."
Wide receiver Corey Bradford paid a visit to Blue Ridge Elementary this morning, where first-grader Joshua Mack won the opportunity to meet Bradford after turning in an essay on why he liked the Texans.
Bradford spoke to an auditorium full of first, fourth and fifth graders about the importance of a strong work ethic and getting good grades. Afterward, he spent time with Mack in his homeroom with the rest of his first grade classmates, as well as a few teachers.
“When I was little, I wish I had someone to talk to me like this and give me motivation,” Bradford said. “I always have fun (doing this). I love to see smiles on kids’ faces.”
After discussing his path to the NFL and how he likes to read at least five books during each off-season, Bradford changed to more lighthearted topics. He shared his love of Fruit Loops cereal with the kids and he also mentioned how he likes watching the SpongeBob SquarePants cartoon. Professional athletes and first graders have a lot in common after all.
