Arrow Why did the burly brawl look so amateurish?? post #1  quote:

now ive seen this mentioned on another thread about the worst scenes in reloaded, and i have to say, i am inclined to agree with a lot of ppl in saying that the BB was one of the worst...but not all of it. it was, definately, an amazing fight, and some very good graphics in there, but only one scene bugs me...the part where neo sweeps the pole under the feet of all of the smiths. now, when the WB got so many of the graphics in the movie right (the virus twins, surroundings of neo as he flies.....any others in the film generally) how could they get this one so wrong??

as this was one of the most anticipated fight scenes in the whole of the movie, shouldnt they have payed a little more attention to detail here....?? i cant really fault the movie in many other ways, but, why oh why didnt they make that more realistic...similarly, the agent jumping onto the car had the same affect. as with m1, and most of m2, whenevr there were cg images, i usually saw them as being practically perfect, but when they are so obvious...kinda like low budget spin offs of the matrix...then it disappoints.

its just a shame that these two particular scenes stand out to me from an otherwise mind blowing movie with amazing sfx.

The BB kicked ass like crazy. It was one of the BEST scenes in the movie. Don't judge a movie based on the quality of the effects. That scene was amazing. And don't give me that "well you don't know about cgi special effects" crap; I'm going to school for cgi. The effects were at times, not believable, but when are cgi effects totally believable. They are easy to pick out 10 times out of 10. It's not like it IS real you know? And anyway, what is the point of this thread? It's not like the W's are going to read this and say "well hot damn, some people didn't like our bb scene.... Oh gosh well we better just remake the som***** for the dvd release." It's not like you can change it. If you don't like the scene, fast foreward through it, or hit the scene skip button on your dvd player.

And the agent jumping on the hood of the car was probably the best done cg in the movie. I can see NOTHING wrong with that scene, other than the fact that he could have easily jumped to the CTS instead. But hey, since when did that matter? It's just got to LOOK cool doesn't it?

Alright. This is it. Now you all know me. I'm going to make this as plain and simple as possible. If it's our time to die it's our time. All I ask is that if we have to give these bastards our lives; WE GIVE EM HELL BEFORE WE DO!

next time u reply, try being a little bit calmer, thers no point in getting angry over a simple view.

baaaaaa: we do know the bros. are BIG fans of anime and i think the reason they wanted to do bullet-time in the first place was to make the matrix look like live action anime. now, the reason i said all that is to say that i thought like you did at first about the burly brawl. but now i don't. the bros. are so into everything, i'm sure the brawl looks exactly as intended. so when they did CG in the matrix they must have gone for anime inspired and styled animation. when i see the burly brawl from this perspective it seems a lot better than it did the first time i watched it.

BAAAAAA, you almost answer your own question. Why indeed would they use SFX in that apparently poor manner when most of the rest of the film is so well done? The only option must be that it was intentional, because as you said, this was the most heavily-advertised and anticipated scene of the film, and so the Wachowskis would have focused much of their efforts on it. Therefore, it was probably closer to the Directors' vision than any other scene in the film, and its final look is subsequently what the Wachowskis must have wanted.

But from the common man's point of view, who doesnt have the logic of this anime concept and all, like me, that scene really looked out of sync and rather cold. I mean there was no involvement as compared to the brawl with Trinity in the high security building in M1. Maybe one of the reasons I didnt like it is that it had no effect on the story, neo escaping was too tame!!

But, that Agent landing on the car was really cool, coz any such impact on a car in reality would have crushed it just like that. And the Zion scenes to were astounding! Hats off to Gaeta, Wachowslkies and the actors!!!

I agree with hanuman about not feeling as involved. It may be more spectacular than the Neo-Smith brawl in M1, but the suspense is gone. In M1, Neo could not simply fly away, and therefore was forced into confrontation. Hopefully in M3 Smith will have developed the ability to fly so that Neo will once again be forced to fight.

yup i agree, and thx for the comments evry1...im not particularly knowledgable about cgi and anime, so, like larke...i didnt think it looked right...i stll dont, but maybe i just need to watch it more. either way, i think the whole neo running round the agents...just before the sweeping part...makes up for it!

I guess the part of the BB that gets to me is the static expression on CG Neo's face... I am impressed that Keanu as Neo is actually MORE animated than the CG Keanu! WTF is going on in the world nowadays?!?!

It's just that I really enjoy the Chateau scene... and Keanu/Neo is there wincing and puckering constantly as he dodges blades and tatoos and stuff.. but while fighting Smith.. who must be a kazillion times harder to fight (not to mention there's 80 of him!).. CG/Neo just.. fights.. thin lipped and stoic.... oh well....

But when he nabs that pole.. and the chorus and fast snare start up.. yes... THAT is entertainment... lovin' that Juno Reactor.

personally, BAAAAAAA, the day you release a CG effect that mimics the burly brawl but without the little "glitch" you will then have the right to complain.

working as a cg effects designer, i know its damn hard just to get character models to bend and work with phisics realisticlly, nevermind placing actual human models into the mix.

anyway, come on! there were, count 'em, ONE HUNDRED smiths on screen at once, and dont tell me you know which one is the real actor, cause you dont. the fact the bros did that seamlessly is enough for someone in my position to give them a standing ovation.

(by the way, that elf-king guy from the lord of the rings one and two, sorry forget his name, is that actor the same one who plays smith in matrix? they look the same)
