Smile Matrix Haiku post #1  quote:

for those who don't know what haiku is i'll offer a basic explanation. haiku is a form of Japanese poetry. it is written on one line and has a 5-7-5 syllable structure and has a seasonal theme. english haiku has adopted a 3 line form with a 5-7-5 syllable structure. this 5-7-5 is not etched in stone as some english haiku writers have opted for a 3-5-3 structure. the 5-7-5 is a little easier to write than 3-5-3 but the 3-5-3 tends to have more of the concise cadence offered by Japanese haiku. there is also a free form of english haiku that adopt a short-long-short form. as far as english haiku is concerned, all of these forms are legitimate expressions of the spirit of traditional Japanese haiku.

with that said i'll get to the meat of this thread. i don't know how well this will be received but i know there are a lot of creative people in this matrix forum. when i woke up this morning there were two words in my head "matrix haiku". i don't know where this came from, but the only place i know to do anything with it is in here. so here it goes. i'm going to present my very own matrix haiku and extend an invitation to anyone else to do the same. you don't have to adhere to a strict 5-7-5 or 3-5-3 structure but i would ask you at least keep a short-long-short form as much as possible. like i said, if this is a bad idea just let the thread die. but i can't wake up with "matrix haiku" in my head and not do anything about it.

"The primary purpose of reading and writing haiku is sharing moments of our lives that have moved us, pieces of experience and perception that we offer or receive as gifts. At the deepest level, this is the one great purpose of all art, and especially of literature." - Bill Higginson

i'm going to start it off with two of my own.

flies in and saves them.

thanks for keeping this thread alive hejimony.

i think haiku is perfect for the matrix. this will make all the old japanese masters roll over in their graves but to me haiku is very similar to bullet-time. in bullet-time we get to focus on one event and see it in ways not seen before. the only difference is that bullet-time enhances spectacular events. haiku, traditionally, enhances the mundane and the overlooked details that are normally taken for granted. yes, i took the high road and wrote about a bullet-time moment. but hejimony, that was perfect. good progression and a nice cadence. well done.

I agree, Larke. Both haiku and the matrix (esp. bullet time) are about the condensation and intensification of mundane experiences. Seeing things in a new way. Wish I'd thought of it first! and I really liked that last one.

hey, who let the Canadian in?

only kidding sierradaddy. good job. i think you did very well for it to be your first haiku. you too, writinggirl. and sorry to hear about your oppressive work environment. what's wrong with those people!? is your boss, by any chance, French? "Causality. There is no escape from it, we are forever slaves to it. Our only hope, our only peace is to understand it, to understand the `why.' `Why' is what separates us from them, you from me. `Why' is the only real social power, without it you are powerless."

Hey, I noticed a drop-off in the use of this BBS... I'm thinking as November approaches it will pick up and be at fever pitch again around the release of Revolutions

Hey, spjk2k: Some of these sound like they're straight from the script? is that right? If so, it would be really cool and pretty impressive that you "found" them lying there, like "jewels in the lotus"...!
