I keep reading about the "doomed crew". If the crew had been given the chance to inspect the suspected damage and delare the ship as un-airworthy for re-entry, could they have stayed aloft to wait for a rescue shuttle, or waited inside the space station? Has NASA mentioned this type of scenario? If so, I missed it. It would seem like a good plan to do an external inspection after every launch on future flights, either by robotic camera or space walk.
