Here is my problem:
They are testing the foam impact at 768 feet per sec, that is 523 miles per hour. if it was 81 sec into the flight...i can't find out how fast it was traveling at that time, and a piece fell off one part of the tank and "floats' down to hit the shuttle wing, which is also going the same speed as the tank was, and the foam was, until it slowed down some because of the air resistance, how fast is the foam going? If I am driving a car at 60 mph and throw out a ball to the person in the back seat, will it hit them at 60 mph? I think not. If I do this outside the car with both of our hands outside the window, does it hit the hand in the back seat at 60 mph because of the 60 mph wind flying by? I don't think so. It is not like it hit a piece of foam that was just dropped by a pelican flying by. In that case the impact speed would be the speed of the shuttle 81 sec into flight. I'm stumped! where have i gone wrong?
I sure hope the investigators read Richard Fynman's account of the Challenger investigation in the book, "The Pleasure of Finding Things Out"
