for anybody who lives on mars, we'll start with the obvious ones:
the nebuchadnezzar's insignia plate contains the following:
"mark III no. 11 nebuchadnezzar made in the usa year 2069"
the obvious bible verse translation here is mark 3:11, which reads:
"and unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, thou art the son of god."
this speaks for itself.
the year 2069 can be translated into the 20th book of the bible, the 6th chapter, and the 9th verse, or proverbs 6:9 -
"how long wilt thou sleep, o sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?"
more self explanatory stuff.
recently i was informed that it could also mean the 2nd book, the 6th chapter, and the 9th verse (exodus 6:9), which is also appropriate:
"and moses spake so unto the children of israel: but they hearkened not unto moses for anguish of the spirit, and for cruel bondage."
this does indeed make sense if moses is represented by morpheus, attempting to convince those who are still plugged into the matrix of the reality of their predicament, but because they are not "ready to be unplugged" due to their mind's enslavement by the program, they have hardened their hearts and minds to the truth.
perhaps both verses are implied, there's no way to know.
following this line of reasoning, here's the insignia on the osiris:
"mark vi no. 16 osiris made in the usa year 2079"
and the translation (mark 6:16):
"but when herod heard thereof, he said, it is john whom i beheaded: he is risen from the dead."
(herod is referring to the multiple reports he recieves about an unknown man, who happens to be jesus.)
and 2079 (proverbs 7:9):
"in the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night"
this is most likely a reference to the original screenplay description of the real world, "there is no morning; there is only darkness and then the fluorescent light sticks flicker on." and of course, the obvious reference to operation dark storm.
the license plate on the cts reads "da203". this is translated as daniel 2:03, or daniel 2:3 (there are only 12 chapters in daniel, so it can't mean chapter 20 verse 3):
"and the king said unto them, i have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream."
neo continually sees trinity falling to her apparent death in his dreams, and this troubles him greatly, because he doesn't want to accept what it might mean.
better yet, morpheus' last line in "reloaded" is, "i have dreamed a dream, but now that dream is gone from me."
agemt smith's car in "reloaded" has a tag which reads "is5416". the translation here is isaiah 54:16, which reads:
"behold, i have created a smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and i have created the waster to destroy."
they don't come much more blatant than that. what's cool is that the "instrument for his work" that he "bringeth forth" is the earpiece in the manila envelope.
then of course, there's the infamous code hidden in the 23 designated to repopulate zion. 7 males and 16 females to begin a new civilization. in genesis 7:16, it reads:
"and they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as god had commanded him: and the lord shut him in."
this section of genesis is the telling of noah's ark, this being the last verse before the flood starts. interestingly, verse 23 actually describes the architects very premise to neo concerning the 23 delegates:
"and every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark."
uh, i really dunno what to say about those. I can see the resemblance of those codes on the license plates, etc, but honestly it seems a little too religious for my taste.
in the words of morpheus, "my beliefs do not require them to."
onward:
there seems to be some foreshadowing in "matrix" that alludes to specific references in "reloaded". the time displayed during the phone call trinity makes to cypher is 13:24:18. if this is code, it's I chronicles 24:18, which reads:
"the three and twentieth to delaiah, the four and twentieth to maaziah"
this is a possible reference to the 23 delegates for the repopulation of zion, or 24 if you include neo (23...delaiah...'delegate'...24...maaziah...'make zion'?). this is one is admittedly a bit of a stretch, but then again, it seems just a little too close to the facts in the movie to be coincidence.
the above code is easier to accept when taken in tandem with the time displayed during neo's phone call to the machines after he has become "the one". this clock reads 14:32:21, or II chronicles 32:21, which reads:
"and the lord sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of assyria. so he returned with shame of face to his own land. and when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword."
these implications are obvious, and there is something to be said for the the fact that these two codes are found in the first "matrix".
and remember what larry and andy said when asked how many hidden clues and references were in the "matrix" series:
I'm not religious either, but I've heard that if nothing else, the bible is a really interesting story once it's broken down and put into lamens terms... Think of how many creepy movies, or now, sci-fi movies, their are with biblical references in them... They would make SO MUCH more sense if we actually read the bible... I'm an athiest, so I don't even believe there's a god... But How could you ask for a better history lesson then to get one from an action/sci-fi movie? Good work SPJ -- keep it up!
Please pardon my pseudo-intellectuaphilisophicalismysiticality.
im in no way affiliated with any religion, but this is a really excellent post. I beleive that youve explained these codes really well and i also beleive they are all relevant.
keep up the good posts spj, you bring nothing but quality material to the discussion.
some absolutely superb analysis/analogy work there spj. even the references which are a bit of a stretch work really really well. we all know there are peee-lenty of religious/spirtual/ philosophical/etc references in the movies, and it looks like you've explained a fair chunk of the religious/biblical ones on this one thread alone. good effort!!!
i had previously posted this one in the graffiti thread, but now it belongs here:
the number on the side of neo's file in "matrix" is "380994otaa". if this is another bible code, here is how it breaks down:
the 38th book of the Old Testament (zechariah), chapter 9, verse 9. 4 could mean to read 4 verses starting at verse 9. not sure, but if this is the case, here is what you get:
"rejoice greatly, o daughter of zion; shout, o daughter of jerusalem: behold, thy king cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
and i will cut off the chariot from ephraim, and the horse from jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from the sea even to the sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.
as for thee also, by the blood of the covenant i have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein there is no water.
turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even to the day do i declare that i will render double unto thee;"
hmm...
"prisoners of hope" in "the pit where there is no water"...
sounds a little like the old underground sewage systems where the last human city is now.
Thanks for this post, spjk2k. I am a believer and I do read the Bible, and these references (indeed, the entire premise of the movie) are the reason I'm such a huge fan.
Whether they realize it or not, I believe the Wachowski's have accurately pictured our current existence as humans. In my worldview, God created us to ultimately be powerful spirit beings, not flesh. But currently we are stuck in this fleshly, material world that seems so very real to the vast majority of us.
Neo, once he had faith and believed he was the One, was able to do amazing things in the Matrix. We too, once we have faith to understand what we are (and what we will become), have the ability to do things we couldn't do before in this material world.
I'm certainly not putting down anyone's world view or beliefs, because we don't all see things the same way. To paraphrase my favorite line from Morpheus, "My beliefs do not require that you do." But I think the Wachowski's have hit a collective nerve with these movies because people sense that there's more truth to them than most realize.
spjk2j, thanks again and for organizing this for us too-- at some point i think this board is going to turn more to taking all this stuff from the movies we as a group have gleaned out, and discuss more the trilogy's meanings and allusions for us in our world- figure what the brothers were trying to tell us.
Neo:I just thought, um...you were a guy.
Trinity:Most guys do
