Question Simulacra and Simulation post #1  quote:

Does anyone on this forum have much information on the book simulacra and simulation. It appears in the first matrix and its in probably the most symbolic scene of the movie, the scene with choi... and does anyone know any significance to the name choi? seems like quite a wierd name to me, thats why i think its got to mean something, all the other names do and most everything that happens does, the wachowski's are amazing. I'm falling in love with the original matrix all over.

===========================================

Signifigances

Thomas Anderson - Andres = man, hence son of man

Thomas- reference to doubting thomas, doesn't believe he is the one

SCENE WITH CHOI
the knock on the door then he gets a disk for a friend and its in the book Simulacra and Simulation- the only signifigance i could find from this is information about "hyper-reality" and how the current world is no longer a true form of "reality" but is virtual b/c of technology. It must have an important meaning though if they put it in the movie

Neo gives choi the disk- "Halleluiah, your my savior man, my own personal Jesus Christ" - obvious reference to Neo as the ONE and savior of all humans. I am feeling less of a sci fi ending and more of a religious/spiritual ending to the movie now, i definetly believe with almost no doubt that Neo will die in revolutions. I almost have a feeling neo will actually turn out not just a symbol of god, but actually being GOD... haha might be far fetched, but it would make sense, the machines said they could not find a way past puting "the one" into the matrix, almost as if God had control over it and made a way for him to stop the matrix, maybe even end the world.(little far fetched but who knows, there is so much christ symbolism)
1st movie - birth
2nd - life
3rd - death (heard this from some interview.)

Neo is worried about being caught and choi says something along the lines "Yeah, this never happend, you don't exist." - reference to the matrix and how none of this is really occuring. Curiousity if the "you don't exist" part might be looked into more? maybe neo doesn't exist in reality, just a program and is only virtual? doubt it though

then Neo asks if choi has ever felt like he's dreaming while still awake. - very obvious reference to matrix

then choi says "sounds like you just need to unplug." - reference to unplugging from the matrix.
=============================================
I guess i am making the point that the movie's plot and action and philosopy is not all that makes it so great. It is truely a work of art with great symbolism, imagery... ect With this being said i gotta watch revolutions some more, i am sure there is many things like this, just needs time for people to figure them out. Also i think looking at the original could help with the second. So thats why my questions come up. Anything with the signifigance of choi and the book simulacra and simulation would be great to hear. I haven't gotten much info about the book, but all that i have so far is very interesting.

If you've actually watched Revolutions, that would make you the absolute most popular person in this forum!!! (so I'll assume you meant reloaded)

Sorry, I don't have any insight into Choi's name. I read a Reloaded script a while ago that said Choi and DuJoir were actually Freedom fighters in the real world and had their own hovercraft. I've come to realize this was a fake script of course, but it was a cool idea...

Hard at work...

I found a really good article on the book simulicara and simulation, defenintly would suggest anyone into looking into it...

http://www.matrixfans.net/symbolism/philosophy.html

I think the use of this book in the movie is actually not so much important to the movie itself but to our reality. Almost as if humans in all reality are already in "a certain type of matrix" technology is taking all humans into the direction of living less and less real lives and more and more virtual life. And that most humans hold the mentality of cypher, that virtual reality is just as good or better then reality. I know this is all just a movie but its almost scary when you look at all this, i mean when one of the smartest people of our time, steven hawking, has talked about how we must protect ourselves from the ever growing abilities of computers and that it is realistic they could become more powerful then us. Its all so interesting, as if we live in our own little matrix, not in the same light, just in a world where half of our life is lived watching a tv, talking on a phone, typing on a computer, or listening to recorded music... in looking at it in a different persepective we already live very "virtual" lives, and is that so bad? NOT REALLY, i love technology =) i think i am a converted cypher-follower.

timc_23,

I remember when looking at another thread or some other Matrix discussion someone mentioned that Choi and Dejoir together as a phrase meant..."Choice of the day"... or something like that....I feel really bad I can't even remember this. But it definately pertains to "Choice" - Choi and "Day" -Dejoir. Someone help me out if I am totally messing this up. Sorry timc_23 I didn't completely answer your question...hopefully I helped.

ShivaDog...

I have seen some people call him Troy and other Choi....if you have a copy of the first movie, maybe watch the credits and see what they list his character as...then this may clear this up.

In response to Timc 23, It really is kinda scary that we have become more and more dependant on technology. But this is beneficial due to the fact that as our lives become more busier (exclude those who only watch t.v or live on the comp)we need more effiecient ways of living our lives. I'ts all part of evolution. If technology is moving this fast i wonder what kind of stuff we'll be seeing when we are all old fogies. (remember back in the day when we had cell phones and palm pilots that connected to our laptops...........)

Also that book sounds interesting, maybe i'll look into it

They were good theories, but I think once Revolutions comes out we will realize very quickly that ALOT of the theories that people have made thus far have been incorrect. Incorrect, however not useless...they simply inspired more thought into the topic and ultimately lead to a better understanding of the movie and to some people a different view on life.
After that this is where I would que Neo's line..."Whoa". Have a good day.

I'm not sure if you answered above, but have you actually SEEN Revolutions?? I think not, since you wouldn't be speculating about what happens, you'd already know. You mean Reloaded, right?

BRAVO for seeing the significance of that scene. Those words, "You're my own personal Jesus Christ / and You don't exist" stuck in my memory, too, as possibly having more than one meaning.

its Choi, someone corrected me- and InsJustin explained to us how Choi. in real life, created PUMMA, Parallel Matrix Multiplication Routines- its in a thread or two from the past couple of days- if you search you should find it- too bad the good threads get lost to discuss Trinity's hair etc.huh?

ok, i found it and bumped it- its at the end of 'questions for people smarter than me'.

Neo:I just thought, um...you were a guy.
Trinity:Most guys do

It has crossed my mind in the past, and reading this thread has only reinforced the possibilty for me that Choi may be part of a hovercraft crew hacked into the matrix. First look at the way they are dressed, and then the whole enterouge(sp?) he had with him. Looked alot like a crew to me, and then there's the references in the conversation. But it also brings up a few questions. Was the sole purpose of them being there to lead Neo to the club to meet trinity, or did they need whatever it was he gave them for a mission. And if it wasnt there purpose to lead him to the club, then it kinda blows a hole in this theory because I doubt crew's would be hacking into the matrix to go hang out at a club. Anyway, just one more thing to think about, I think it would be pretty cool if he was, he seemed like a pretty cool dude.
