Summary: iMovie won't import SWF files smoothly. The easy workaround is to transcode SWF to iMovie more "edit" friendly codec. Here is how.

I've had huge problems with SWF and iMovie 11. I am using a screen record program called 'Jing', on my Mac. The clips I'm making are '.swf' (flash) files. When I importing the SWF video into iMovie, the program refused the file. Searching from Google and got some recommended solutions for using SWF files in iMovie. Below I will share the best way to bring and edit flash SWF movie in iMovie(no matter iMovie 08, iMovie 09 or iMovie 11).
As far as I know, SWF is one of the most dominant flash container formats and you can find its wide applications on different websites. It is not supported by Apple?s iMovie. A better option to edit SWF in iMovie is to convert SWF to iMovie most compatible format Apple InterMediate Codec first. Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac is the utility I?m using and would like to recommend.
With it, you can rewrap SWF files to AIC .mov for iMovie with fast encoding speed. Moreover, the Mac video conversion tool can help you convert SWF as well as FLV, AVI, MKV, MTS, VOB, MOV, MPG, etc on Mac and export the professional encoders, namely ProRes, DNxHD for importing to FCP, Avid, etc. flawlessly. Just get it and follow the steps to convert .swf to iMovie in Mac OS X(Yosemite, Mavericks included).
Converting SWF files to edit in iMovie on Mac
1. Launch the SWF to iMovie Converter, then you can click "Add Video" button to load .swf source files. Convert supports batch conversion, so you are allowed to add multiple files to convert at a time.

2. Click the format bar, and move mouse cursor to "iMovie and Final Cut Express -> Apple InterMediate Codec (AIC) (*.mov)" and set it as the target format.

3. Adjust the video and audio parameters, including the Bitrate of Video&Audio, Video Size, Sample Rate, Frame Rate, Audio Channels, etc., by clicking the Settings button on the main interface for getting the best quality.

4. Click the "Convert" button to start transcoding flash SWF to AIC MOV for iMovie with the best SWF converter.
After the process completed, click "Open" button to find the generated videos. And then you can transfer the converted SWF files to iMovie 11/09/08 easily and quickly.
